Survivorman Leatherman?

In the new season he's using a Leatherman Charge. In the last season he used a traditional SAK once, a Swiss Tool once or twice, and most of the time a Leatherman Wave. After filming the first season he stated that his favorite multitool was the Wave.

Going to the Leatherman Charge was a natural move since the Charge is pretty much just a Wave with a 154CM or S30V main blade (a couple of versions out now) and different scales.

Season 1 multitools:

Canadian Boreal Forest - Vic Swisstool
Arizona Desert - Leatherman Wave
Costa Rica - Vic Swisstool
Georgia Swamp - Vic Huntsman
Canadian Arctic - Vic Swisstool
Mountain - Vic Swisstool
Canyonlands - Vic Swisstool
Plane Crash - Vic Swisstool
Lost at Sea - Vic Swisstool

Season 2:
Kalahari: Leatherman Charge

I have Season 1 on DVD and made notes of which tools he used. :D

Thanks for doing that!

I wonder if he'll keep using the Charge or switch on every episode?
Did he use the Charge is the first ep of Season 2- Costa Rica?

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean, Varg -- Costa Rica was Season 1, and he used a Swisstool. It's visible at least twice, once when he's building his shelter and again when he's ripping up some coconuts.

Whoops. I didn't mean Costa Rica was in Season 2. I had just watched it before watching Ep 1 of Season 2.

Amazon sells the Survivorman DVD's. They were as low as $13.00, but now they are selling for around $20.00.

I captured Season 1 on TIVO and then transferred it to .MPG files on my computer with a WinTV. I have the files saved on DVD and it allows me to freeze frame, zoom in, take screen shots, etc. I just went through Season 1 and here is what Les Stroud used for multi-tools.

Season 1:

Canadian Boreal Forest - SAK
Northern Ontario (Plane Crash) - Leatherman Wave
Arizona Desert - Leatherman Wave
Costa Rica - Leatherman Wave
Georgia Swamp - SAK
Canadian Arctic - Leatherman Wave
Rocky Mountains - Victorinox Swiss Tool
Utah Canyonlands - Victorinox Swiss Tool
Lost at Sea - Victorinox Swiss Tool

Season 2:
Kalahari: Leatherman Charge

NOTES: The Charge and Wave look a lot alike, and they are for the most part the same tool except for the material of the side scales and the material of the main blade. On some versions of the Charge, there is also a gut hook/belt cutter on the spine of the serrated sheepsfoot.

The Swiss Tool has a more blunt profile on the pliers while the Wave has longer, thiner pliers. The Wave also opens differently to get the blade out. The profile of the main blade is noticeably different between the Swiss Tool and the Wave. The Wave also as a separate, serrated sheepsfoot blade with a uniquely angled profile on the tip while most sheepsfoot blades on knives have a curved tip profile. You can plainly see Leatherman's uniquely angled fully serrated sheepsfoot blade in the Costa Rica episode when he cuts open the coconut.

The SAK's (Swiss Army Knives) he used in two different episodes I didn't take the time to examine which model, but at a casual glance they looked like standard length ones made by Victorinox.

Thanks for the info.

I recommend getting Surviorman Season 1 at Wal-Mart -- it's comparable in price to Amazon and the Wal-Mart version of the DVD set includes a third DVD containing one 1-hour ep on surviving urban disasters.

I think they've pulled those DVD's due to low sales.

I've searched 4 Wal-marts in four different cities and nobody had them in stock. I asked the manager and he said they pulled them due to low sales.

Wow, that's a shame! I saw a post about that DVD release on (I think) EDC Forums and was able to get to WM the day it was released...

WM sells the DVD set on their Web site but the pic is of a the standard 2-DVD set, not the "special" 3-DVD set... Not sure if that's a stock photo, or if they stock both the 2- and 3- set.

Before Les became "Survivorman" he used a SAK on his original episode. When I watched this 4 years ago, it really made me think of how to EDC some firestarting tools. He had a really tough time getting a fire started.

This was back in 2003 or so.

Here is a FAQ from lesstroudonline.com:

Q: What multi tool do you use?

Les: My favourite multi tool is the Leatherman Wave - or any other Leatherman

Also from lesstroudonline.com FAQ:

Q: Why do you carry a multitool and not a sheath knife?

Les: Normally I carry both – but for the show I decided I needed the little saw blade for a number of possibilities.

Here is an FAQ from discovery channel's website:

Q: I've watched several episodes of your show and I've noticed that you always carry the same "multi-tool." What type is it? Which items do you use that a good-sized, fold-up knife does not have? Which feature, besides the blade, is the most useful to you and why?

A: My favorite multi-tool is the Leatherman Wave. Other than the multi-tool, an ax is an amazing item to have. Don't forget to keep a sharpening file with it and learn how to sharpen — it makes a big difference. A bandana is always useful and, of course, a fool-proof way to start a fire is essential.
There is no question that having a multi-tool or fold-up knife with a saw blade is a fantastic advantage. That little saw blade makes fashioning tools and traps a lot easier.

I watched the Geogia Swamp episode again last night and it appears as if the saw I asked about in a previous post was in fact the SAK saw. My bad. -DT
