Swel-Lock needed?

Okay, so after looking at the data sheet it says that the chemical name for swell-lock is dipropylene glycol which I remember reading on here before. So, when doing a quick search here, i got some older threads from a few years ago, and wondering if anything changed about the stuff. Some swear by it, others say its not needed or to use wood glue or BLO.
I was about to order some DPG, but wondering if is the right stuff, as I also remember reading that the swell lock stuff is dpg and water. So, can anyone clarify?
Is it needed, and should I order the Swel lock product or the dipropylene glycol chemical? Any help would be appreciated, just ordered a few new handles from HH and figured maybe on getting this too. Thanks

I recently saw a product by DAP that was similar. Seems pretty new haven't seen it around before really. Anyone ever try it? I think its even called DAP Wood Swell and Lock. I'm pretty curious since there is a lowes not too far from me.

I think it's the same stuff. It was the MSDS for the DAP product that clued me in about DPG.

Thanks for the info. My lowes didn't have it in the store they said probably only an online product. I'm just going to order some DPG. I appreciate all the help.

If you haft/hang the axe correctly, you need no additives of any kind.

This is true in the short term! How many of us have ever stumbled across an old axe that has a tight handle that is devoid of pounded in steel wedges, nails, screws and keys? Very few! I presume that SwelLock and it's affiliates (even Chair Doctor?) don't have a negative effect so why not give it a shot. I soak my heads in thin oil every now and again and winter time (low humidity) loosening via shrinkage has dropped off considerably. I don't think oiled up eyes will benefit from DPG or any swelling agents so something like this would have to be done right from the start.
Would be an interesting long term test for someone: one hang with and one hang without, to go with equal use of both implements over a 5-10 year period.

Yeah I can't see the harm, I'm tempted to get some myself, particularly if it costs almost nothing. So Square (and anyone else) are you just applying it to the wedge when it's driven?

I put some on the kerf and drip some all over the wedge. I'll tell you in just a few hours the haft did swell up real nice so I will be using this stuff from now on. Hope that helps.

I ordered some for my oak spindle chairs. It worked OK. I use it on all axe hangs. Why not?
