Does anyone own or has ever tried this ? I very interested in your opinion. Its $800 and I'm sure it would be vicious in a confrontation. However, my concern is its lack of practical value outside of a self-defense situation...

What do you guys think? Would you guys buy one if you had the $$$ ?

You have to be kidding..... Watchin way TOO many Stephen King movies ....
Who are you goin to fight .... Beelzebob .....
Your parents aren't goin' like you swingin that thing around your siblings or the neighbor kids .....

That looks like something Jason or Freddy Kruegerwould carry but the people involved are reputable martial artists so it would probably work well. It would also scare the heck out of an attacker.

Just make sure you let us know when you stab yourself in the leg with that thing. If you amputate anything make sure pics are included:rolleyes:

"This weapon is the result of genetic manipulations , by taking the genes of other existing implements, our team of researchers successfully spliced the DNA of"... a Mall ninja, David Hasslehof in a spandex super hero costume and the shark knife from the worlds ugliest knife thread.

Ad copy says it all, if you are a klingon this is a weapon. Otherwise this falls squarly in the silly bin. Notice they mention the tip is taken from Neely but he has nothing to do with the knife.

Kidding? No, if I wanted a good laugh I would follow you into the jon and watch you take a leak... Please save the condescension...

I was asking because this guy "Szabo" is an incredibly respected martial artist with extensive military history, and I was wondering why he would be peddling something that seemed to originate from a Star Trek episode. The thing looks vicious, but way too impractical in the field. I was curious if there was some kind of appeal within the industry, especially considering its price.

Now books, don't get huffy. You opened the door by asking two questions. A couple of the folks answered the first question. They told you what they think. You probably meant to ask what they thought of the design rather than what they thought of the concept of you buying one of these.

So as not to offend, I will only answer the second question:

"No, I would not buy one if I had the $$$."

books, I agree with your assessment of JGarth AND Laci Szabo. :D

I like browsing the Szabo website, but I can't imagine any normal civilian use for that particular piece, and I doubt the military would want it around (officially) either.

Your right. But asking for an opinion on an unusual product, and asking for condescension and ridicule are two different things...

But your right. I should have focused my inquiry on the design...

As far as defending yourself with a sharpened implement, be it a sharp stick or rambo's wet dream of a knife, what matters is the user and not the implement. Its always been this way and it always will be.

As for the "sickle" you'd probably have better luck using it to cut grass rather than in a fight.

Toshishiro Obata might buy something like that.

Then again, he already owns a pair of custom fighting sickles. As far as I know, all he does use them for is to cut "grass", namely tatami mats and bamboo.

Honestly, that particular model on his website would not be near the top of my "want it" list. There are just other designs that seem more pragmatic for self-defense.

How would you have it "at the ready" when attacked? A lot of things would be great to fight an attacker, if only you had them with you when attacked. So there's a fine line between what you can carry about and all the stuff you just want to be having. At least that's how it is for me. I never carry the bigger fixed blades I own not even while hiking. They seemed a good idea at the time, but they make me aware that they are hanging off my belt so they stay at home. (plus I'd never buy anything from that place it seemed full retail and I'm a best price buyer)

if it has "battle" in its name , its probably not fit for battle.
( think sog fusion battle axe :barf: )

the busse BM is definitly fit for battle , but i still think battle sounds corny. Just stay away from silly designs

Esav I like your comments. I think lately I have seen much too much of the poking fun at new members questions. This is supposed to be a forum where we can ask questions and get information. This for me is a community that we want to grow, communities don't grow by making new people feel uncomfortable. Sometimes I understand these comments are meant to be sarcastic, but sarcasm doesn't work well in print. This is not directed at anybody in particular, like I said I have seen a lot of this lately and had it been done to me when I first arrived I might not have come back. And that would have been my loss as there is a lot of great info here.

Books
to answer you question I would not pony up the money for that knife. I also like to look at Laci's website to see what is available but I would never buy. Along those same lines I also look at traditional fixed blades but because I live in a very Urban area I wouldnt buy a fixed blade either.

Oh and Books, Welcome to the community. Stay and you will learn a lot about knives and meet some people with a lot of info to share.

The sickle has a long history as a military tool. There are plenty of Egyptian and some other Mediterranean cultures that used them. If I get a chance I'll post some images of bronze sickles. They seemed to be effective since they were used for many centuries. They are a bit large for todays society, unless you've got a lot of space around you without any neighbors.

I figure its all relative. If I had the money I would buy at least one knife or edged instrument from every quality manufactuerer and every custom maker out there.

your response to jgarth was classic, books. its not too often I laugh out loud in front of the computer!

Books,
Learn how to post a well defined question(s), not attempt to clarify a ludicrous post after being confronted regarding your initial post. I could care less who agrees with you, and what someone supposedly had in "military" experience.
Make anything, market it cleverly, and some FOOL will eventually buy it.
I served 2 full combat tours in Nam ,and never heard, saw, or anyone even joke about such a ridiculous thing for anything, yet alone "confrontation.
If ya' can't take it, which is quite evident, get it together.

Why doesn't this part of your statement shock me, it says a lot about the person who wrote it .....

I would follow you into the jon and watch you take a leak .

Could be that the kids on the block are giving you a rough time, but this item is not the solution to their confrontations.
Have mommy talk to their parents. Don't worry, mommy will make it better soon.

JGarth ....

I sort of like the Jaws Warncliff blades at the bottom of the page but I must say, that's about it. I'll stick with my Manix, Sebbie, 710, Al Mar SERE, etc. for folders and my Ontario's, Camillus CQB, Dozier's, etc. for my fixed blades. Those just aren't my style.

Regards
