Hey guys,

I've seen this guys site, and some of weapons look damn evil. Some look completely uselessm Some look practical. Some are very overpriced.

I haven't heard much of anything about him or his knives/swords.

This thing looks..."interesting."

"UUK"

Got a UUK. Mine was a 2nd hand from Ebay and the seller professionally grounded the edge thinner which made it a better cutter. Other item from Szabo i've got is the Karambit (one with a spike on the opposite of the blade end, 4got the name :)).

Love my UUK. Honestly, it is not a utility blade and if you pop it out to cut a cardboard box you'll be stuck with a rep that'll last till end of time. As a fighting blade it is well designed. There is a youtube vid by Laci explaining the UUK so I won't go there but let me say it stabs hard and reaches long (wrist is not bent too much) and the back cut is instinctive. The UUK is designed to be close combat as well with skull crusher.

Kerambit takes a little getting used to and is more suited to be used with the blade on the index finger end. Well designed and when used to it, it is easy to use and deadly. The spike is strong enough and well placed/designed enough to pierce steel plate (1mm to 2mm thick from my experiment) without hurting your hand too much in the process.

All in all, costly and I advise you to wait and scope the market for a 2nd hand. I lik them but would not pay the prices listed in Laci's website.

Laci Szabo is the real deal

he is a highly skilled operator and weapons designer

He has been a cop

tops has picked up one of his designs

All around great guy

I've had one of his "Filipino Boxcutters" for years and really like it. I need to get some kydex made for it one of these days. There was a problem with getting the knife to me in a timely manner and Laci called me himself to explain things. The samples he had on hand weren't up to his standards, so he had to get more made. Stand up guy, IMHO.

Spyderco also picked up his Szabofly design.

Bit weird too. I've got really small hands and my Szabo items fit them fine. But I know some (well... most) people have bigger hands so how does the Szabo stuff fit them? I know from youtube that Laci Szabo has big hands so how tight is it for him?

Esav, if you like the Filipino Boxcutter but it was bit small then maybe you can try out the Tops version. Comes with or without scales and is of 1095 steel. Scorpion's Tail I think it was called. You might be interested in trying them out.

The Scorpion's Tail is way too aggressive for what I want.
I think that's a Kelly Worden design.

Laci Szabo designs the best urban utility and fighting knives I have ever owned, period. I say "designs" because he doesn't actually make them. He collaborates with a lot of well known knife makers to do that (David Mosier, Black Cloud, Fred Perrin, Bud Nealy, John Greco, Robert Newton, DJ Urbanovsky, Spyderco, TOPS, etc etc).

Laci has his finger on the pulse of the EDC/extreme survival needs of pretty much everyone from military and law enforcement personnel to average citizens.

The best part is he never stops moving, never stops tweaking his models. He is absolutely ruthless when it comes to design and every part of every weapon exists for an explicit purpose.

If you know what you want to do with a knife, call Laci and he will consult you on what to buy.

And about the prices, everything on Laci's site, with the exception of TOPS and Spyderco knives, are custom made. If you buy a Szabo designed knife made by David Mosier you'll pay what Mosier would charge for something similar. It's all custom stuff so you'll pay custom prices.

But if cost is an issue, the TOPS Felony Stop is the best self-defense production knife ever make, in my opinion, and can be had for a hair over $100.

I have had UUK #12 for many years, along with the synthetic matching trainer. Bought them from Laci in person, long ago. It is a very unique weapon and well made. Of course, I can't say it's among the dozen knives I use the most.:o

I'm looking at picking up possible a full size narc in the future. He sounds like quite the guy to have a conversation with about self defense though.

I wouldn't want him upset with me!

[Pretty unlikely because he's a very mellow and pleasant guy with customers/friends.]

Laci's UUK and Krav Maga go together like peas and carrots...that guy knows his business.

Its one thing for tactical peanut butter knives to be pricey, they get carried in malls, shown off to fat men wearing chic tacticaliwear with skull rings at sausage parties, Laci's stuff isn't for those guys.

My dad god bless him is 65 and went through Laci's SD system about 5 years ago and he is devout with that UUK.

Esav, how's about the Devil's Elbow from Tops? Despite it's name it's more mild mannered compared to the Scorpion's Tail. However it lacks the ring and I suppose you could always weld one.

The Elbow or the Tops Grim Ripper is my next buy. I'll take my time to decide.

Check him out starring in the movie "The Vault" with Bas Rutten and Diana Inosanto. You can catch him using the Szabo Uuk.

Every time I visit that site, I look at a knife called the Ogre. There is no way that I really need this knife, but God is it tempting....................

Never owned one of his knives, or even handled one, but I love some of the designs. He's also a super nice guy and very knowledgeable.
