I love tactical short swords and want one very bad for no good reason
I'm not a soldier or practicing martial artist, just a poser
Have any veterans out there ever used one or wished thay had one with them on a mission?
Am I wrong to think that these badass blades are made for guys like me or do pros use them?

I think most veterans or current serving soldiers would want a reliable firearm and lots of ammo. What is a "tactical" short sword anyway?

Arm chair Ninja eh? Ever hear of shotguns or 45 caliber pistols.... hmmmm?

guy wants to get himself a short sword? who cares?

i say get it and enjoy!

and i wouldn't think there are any military personnel who would find a sword particularly useful. maybe a machete in the jungle, but i doubt in any other circumstances.

Now now, the question was fairly asked, no need to heap on the scorn.

I have not been to "the sandbox" but a friend of mine edited a film of interviews with soldiers there, I have seen more than your average amount of footage of troops in action for what that's worth. They are carrying a lot of weight as it is, mass is at a huge premium, as it has always been for soldiers basically since forever. I have never seen a soldier carrying anything like even a short sword, I would imagine anyone who bought one would leave it at the base after a few patrols.

Even the Bowie it seems was not so popular back in the civil war days, too heavy. I can only imagine what a Busse AK47 or Atrim sword would feel like after long days of marching.

Not to mention, what officer is going to want their troops carrying such a thing around?

If you like them get yourself one, it would be fun to hack stuff with, I guess just don't think you are outfitting yourself with anything the troops are using.

The new CRK&T Hisshou, might fit the bill here. I don't think they are out yet as they are a 2009 release. Saw that MSRP is $325, but figure street to be around $200 or less. It looks like CRK&T has built a high performace knife, if price is any indicator. Do know I read that it comes with a Kydex sheath and not the molded plastic that CRK&T usually provides.

Personally, I wouldn't carry one. If I were to carry a large edged tool/weapon (I don't; 7inch blade is my standard, maybe 9 if I'm getting a Rambo impulse) I'd go for a tomahawk as it can be used for both combat and busting into houses, making firing ports, smashing hadjis Honda, etc etc. However, from what I've seen they're pretty damn cool and I'd love to have one instead of my knife if it every came down to that...which would be bad news. Could I slap on the back of my vest? Probably, but it'd be a bit of a pain I'd think; definitely something that requires a lot of dedication.
Like it? Go for it. Think you'll carry it in the sandbox? Think again.

The psychological reaction of any man, when he first takes the smatchet in his hand, is full justification for its recommendation as a fighting weapon. He will immediately register all the essential qualities of a good soldier-confidence, determination, and aggressiveness.

Did someone say SMATCHET? ;)

Here's an excerpt in PDF format from Get Tough regarding the Smatchet, and from which the above (infamous) quote is taken.

I am unaware of any realistic modern missions that would benefit from a short sword.

Sad, but true. They are "cool" but perhaps not tactically valid today.

I believe that there is only one sword currently being issued to active military -the Ginunting sword carried by Philipino Marines in their jungle wars against Abu Sayeff. (these Islamic militants are the same "Moros" that brought about the adoption of the Colt Govt. (1911) pistol in .45ACP.

You could also go with a khukri, but that's just a big knife.

Maybe he wants something more like the Ginunting on this page?

Those guys have some neat "short Swords" if you want to call them that.

Supposedly the Phillipino army trains with Ginunting's due to the dense foliage of the jungles there. It is said that on more than one occasion that they are used due to having it in hand when they come across the bad guys.

At least that is what I saw on the History Channel. :)

Edited to add... I want this one

Many Filipinos who fought during WWII were never really "issued" weapons in the normal sense, and made do with what was already avaliable. My grandfather was a member of the Philippine Scouts and started off with just a Bolo. That being said, once they were able to capture a large store of japanese rifles and later were supplied with american rifles, he rarely used the bolo as a primary weapon. Also, as was mentioned before, this was jungle fighting and a bolo or machete was a tool as much as a weapon.

But don't let that stop you from buying an awesome sword~

the Busse Ruck sword was a military overrun. So some people must use them. But it is probably not all that common.
