Talk me out of a Spyderco Police...

Lately I've felt a great need to purchase a stainless steel handled Police model with full serrations. This knife is just so iconic to me, can be seen in the hands of many villains and heroes alike on the big screen. To me it screams "90s action film" haha. The saber grind (is it hollow ground?) with swedge is simply a work of art, the handle is no frills and beautiful. Not to mention that crazy acute tip it has...

Now, here's the thing. My knife philosophy has basically been about being great work knives, not self defense, "tactical", "survival", etc... just a knife that carries well in the pocket (or waistband), and has great ergonomics and blade design for anything I need to do at work... When I got my Military sprint run with CPM M4 steel a couple years back I stopped buying knives, I don't think anything can top it as a work knife. Aside from some beautiful slipjoints and customs, I haven't really even felt an urge to buy a knife since this one, I think all I've purchased since then are the Traditional 2011 and 2012 BF knives.

I've never owned a serrated spyderco, combo edge or full, and have always been interested in breaking into that. I think the Police model would be good for that with nearly four inches of serrations, yikes! SS is not my favorite handle material, I find it downright unusable on small knives like the Leek, but I got a SS Byrd as a groomsman gift that is larger and it is fine in hand and pocket, if not my first choice.

The reason I'm having reservations is I simply don't see it kicking the Military out of my pocket for work, hiking, bicycling, etc... It's not exactly expensive at around $100, but I feel like if I ever need to put on a nice suit and play mobster or detective for a night the Police would fit perfectly. Maybe tie someone to a chair and threateningly slice an apple in front of them with it or something, you know?? haha okay, I'm starting to ramble.

They aren't very grippy clipped in a pocket and they tend to slide around a lot more than than the newer G-10 model. But, they are very thin and I like mine.

oh trust me. Whether I buy a new knife or not, I WILL buy beer.

Going to a great local brewery tonight in fact. Probably start off with a nice amber, throw a couple IPAs in the middle when the band gets cranking, then finish it off sipping their amazing Oatmeal stout out on the balcony.

The Ulize is sexy, but I think I'd actually like the Police blade better. Never been a fan of recurve or very rounded belly, it has both. I love wharncliffes and nearly straight profile knives, the Police has just that subtle curve leading to a wicked point.

Plus the whole desire isn't really based on usefulness, but on that classic Spyderco design which the Ulize isn't.

Who says it's not a good work knife? The Spyderco Police would work well as an EDC carry, not just a fighting knife. Sharpen the serrations well, and it can do near everything a plain edge can. And come on, it's only $100 ;)

I'm not saying it's not a good work knife, but nothing can compete with the Military, IMO. Especially with CPM M4 steel compared to vg10.

I'm sure it can handle everything I need to do, but you're right it's only a couple tanks of gas... hmmm :p

That is one of the most ionic knives ever, I would never, ever do you such a disservice of talking you out of that one. :D
You're right VG10 cannot compete with M4, not even on the same planet. However, the joy of a fully serrated Spyderco is one of those things that every human being should experience. The knife will do anything the Military can. Serrations stay sharp a really long time.

I'm sure you hate classic knives.
High production quality surely pisses you off.
Maximum blade length for the handle size...who wants that?
Functional serrations that cut efficiently while looking good are completely yucky.
You definitely should not get one. ;)

Have to recommend a ZT0560/1.
-MUCH better grip.
-IMHO, better, smoother locking mechanism.
- ELMAX is awesome.

They are sexy, but I prefer the military as I don't like lockbacks, if looking for a knife of that size/shape.

lol wtf, that suggestion is from left field...

That knife is completely different, not classic or iconic in the slightest. And I already have the Military which has a titanium framelock, way better steel than ELMAX, and even better grip (for me).... So, not sure what that has to do with anything?

I've had this inner conflict many times myself, and just came to realize that it would sit in a box more than it would sit in my pocket. I love the simplicity of a SS knife, but they just don't do it for me in EDC use. At the same time, when you make this knife with G10, it just doesn't have the same appeal for me. I too would sooner recommend a Military in G10...just as iconic, lighter, better ergonomics and wet hand grip, almost as long in the blade, and much more user friendly and versatile.

That's how I feel about it too. Just seems to lose its soul in g10 version, IMO... And I know what you mean about not wanting it to sit in a box. My Military has had me thinking about selling off most of my other knives because none of them see use any more. Except for maybe keeping the Native or Cento4 as a running knife (though I broke my knee and probably won't be running any time soon) However the broken knee has also changed my work load, and I don't need the EDC perfection of the Military necessarily, so I think the Police could see some decent rotation....

I have some experience with somewhat larger sized SS knives, I got the Byrd that is about Endura sized in SS. I don't know the model, it was a groomsman gift. Never would have thought to carry it except it means a lot to me and has my initials engraved on it, and the SS grew on me. Though I do think half g10 half Ti is probably my favorite handle right now. Great mix of that solid feel in hand, warm texture of the Ti, and grip of the g10...
