I am inches away from buying a Ruger 57. Other than the cost of ammo why shouldn’t I buy this gun???

Model: 16401
Caliber: 5.7x28mm
Capacity: 20+1
Barrel Length: 4.94"

Thanks!

I’ve never had any issues with any Ruger I purchased. They had some issues with their first semi-auto 9mm. But that was back in the 80’s....

I had the FN five seven and it just got boring, feels like 9mm and honestly there's not enough evidence proving the cartridge is a man stopper, for every story you hear of someone getting a headshot on a hog and dropping it instantly you hear a story of someone using it in self defense and having to mag dump someone, I'd look elsewhere is all.

It’s a full frame pistol... I don’t intend to use it for self defense or CCW.

The 5.7 round is mostly a curiosity IMO. It's cool, but I can't think of a practical use for it.

I think it would be a fun range gun though.

I'd pass on it. Expensive ammo that can be hard to find in some cases, and you need sunglasses it you fire it at night. I agree with Mitchell, a range toy.

I see it as mostly a range toy with ammo that I suspect is more difficult to obtain than many others. But if you have an itch for something less common, go for it.

I have no problem with an external safety. What's it matter if it is mostly a range gun?

If you want to spend that kind of money on ammo, and have all that muzzle blast for a fancy 22 magnum, then Id say get one. Looks like a better version of an FN, for half the price.

It’s a toss up between that and something in .357 Sig!!

Hmmmmm. In that case you could buy .357 Sig pistol along with .40 S&W and 9mm conversion barrels.

That would be a pretty versatile combo.

What happens if there is a zombie apocalypse and the only box of ammo you can find is 5.7x28....buy and you'll be safe.... Seriously though I have an FN57 and it's a hoot, not sure they have it for the Ruger but FN has a 10 round extension for the magazine so 30 rounds in a handgun(that's more reliable than a .22 magnum auto)

I like the 5.7 round, although I only own one firearm that shoots it. That being said, although YT reviewers, i.e. MAC and Paul Harrell had positive comments on it's function, MAC goes on to state that the Ruger 57 doesn't have a firing pin safety, and the Ruger 57 manual states that "when carrying the pistol with a loaded magazine in place, the chamber should be empty..."

For some, either point isn't a consideration. The decision is really up to you.

I'll add, around here, a box of 50 FNH brand self defense 5.7 is about the same price as WWB 45 JHP. Not cheap, but less expensive than some popoular 9mm SD rounds in my area (mail order not allowed), i.e. Fed HST 9mm at $1.50 per round in some shops (e.g. Cab...'s pre-pandemic, and not including our county's added tax on ammo).
