My father-in-law gave me this knife last night as he knows I like knives and for some reason was just inclined to give it to me..

I'm curious to what steel they used, what year produced, also what they sold for new and what its worth now, not looking to sell just like to know..

camera wasn't working the best::

Rob, Welcome . I can't be for sure but it looks like a model 976 Harley's 50 yr. Anniversary model . Produced in 1986 and sold for 200$ . Now, its probably doubled . Produced in Buck's custom shop and the etching may have been done by Aurum as they were doing etchings for Buck at that time . The steel may have been 440C as the custom shop used that steel a lot but not as sure on that . Your Father-in-law really likes you as he just passed the torch to you with this one . "A GREAT" Buck knife . Thanks for sharing it with us . DM

Very cool knife Rob,

That knife is on my wants list. Sorry DM, but you are not correct on the model or year it was made (I know all those big knives look the same). That knife was issued in 1984 and is called Harley-Davidson Bowie, it's a model 903. The issue price in 1984 was $220.00 and current value from ebay is $200 - $300, there are a few on ebay all the time as there were 3000 of these knives made. If you go to ebay you will see a few that have a high asking price and are not selling.

Rob you have one hell of a nice father-in-law! There is a guy at our local gun shows that has one of those 903 HD Bowies, he has been taking it to the show for the last two years. He wants $350 for it and every time I tell him I can get it for $250 on ebay and he drops his price to $300, one day he will drop it to $250 and I'll buy it from him.....hmm the next show is next weekend ;)

thanks for the info guys, I tried google but got bogged down as to much stuff was coming up.

it seems like a very well made knife, I'll clean her up a bit and maybe strop it.

Here's the complete story, Wednesday night I went over there 50 mins away to patch his roof as rain was expected..

I roofed his house in January so its new, hes had a woodpecker make its way into the gable eave area, 6 times he went out there and could never find this thing, as he got more frustrated one day it started pecking on the house again and this time he found it, he had a 12 ga with #4 shot and didn't even think about it, shot the bird as he seen it on the soffet screen, blew a hole about the size of a baseball clean through the roof.

we were in a hurry and was ready to leave to go pick up my kids when he had me come in for a minute and gave me the knife..

don't think I'll be getting rid of this one anytime soon..

Ok, JB I see it listed . Thanks . Those are not my forte and was just trying to help . But next time I'll sit on it . DM

Brother David,

Don't ever sit on information for our fellow buck brothers as everyone wants answers.

Rob,

Your story is priceless and that makes your new Buck HD 903 priceless! Keep that knife and the story that goes with it in your family....like the Buck warranty it will last a life time, many times over.

well it looks to be a limited edition buck / harly davidson aneversery knife they are rare and of a lot of value. it is probebly worth about 450 to 500 as for the steel it is probobly 440c but since it is a buck it could also be 420Hc.

Thats a great gift from a father in law. I dont think mine would give me a free cup of coffee let alone a fine knife like yours.

With this knife being this early its most likely to be of 440C as Buck did not began to use 420HC until 1993 .
Thanks guys for the vote of confidence . DM

Could it have been 425M?I think Buck was using that steel in their standard models then.
