Tell me about Thunder Mugs

I have a BNA black powder mortar that has a bore large enough to shoot a golf ball. It's not very large, but takes 600 grns of Black Powder for a charge. I like the "booms" that thump the chest, and the mortar gives a decent thump. It'll set off car alarms if too close.

Anyway- I ran out of fuse and got on some black powder cannon sites looking for more. As I was surfin, I came across a couple sites selling Thunder Mugs. Now I have to buy one. I've narrowed it down to two, but would like to hear opinions from those that own and use these outstanding devices.

The first choice has a 1 3/4" bore diameter. Stands 8" tall and sports a handy handle (scroll down to the Thunder Mug):

The second is the "Big Daddy" from Pyro Creations - 2" bore but only 5" tall:

This is my question; which will give a louder boom? 1 3/4" bore and 8" tall or 2" bore but only 5" tall? I want the loudest:D

I know there are lots of cannon and mortar choices, but I'm interested in Thunder Mugs specifically.

Somebody on this forum has to have experience with theses..?

I think I saw one on Pawn stars one time, but now I want one. I always loved the cannon shots at the Citadel football games when I was a kid. Looks like I need one for New Years Eve. A daddy sized fire cracker.

I've considered building/buying a cannon for years...Just don't think my five acres is a big enough place to safely shoot it. I mean why have a cannon if you can't shoot it? Thunder mug looks like it might be a reasonable compromise.

I'm off to youtube.

The shorter the barrel the louder it is, and in this case it's also bigger bore.

That's what I was thinking, but needed validation:p. My Father In Law used to shoot this little cannon(which is what started it all for me):

It's since been retired after my Brother In Law overcharged it and damn near blew up his cul-de-sac. Now I just don't trust its integrity.

So I went out and bought my own:

Now the cannon was loud...but that short little mortar thumps the heart with the recommended 600 grns of black powder...I think Cougar Allen's nailed it. I need the Big Daddy - that should give the mortar a run for its money.

And I don't shoot projectiles with these - too dangerous for my taste. I'm just chasin the BOOM!

"Thunder Mug" is also a euphemism for a chamber pot, as in a pot to piss (or $#!+) in. That's what I thought you were posting about! :)

This is a thunder mug.

This is a chamber pot.

The thunder mug is supposedly for signaling. The chamber pot, not so much.

The funny thing is that the really early cannons were breech loaders and used something that looked a lot like a thunder mug.

As I say, it's a euphemism. And you can see why. And when you sit on one and emit certain noises . . . well, you're certainly signaling something.
