So I just bought a Spyderco Tenacious, and I love the size, blade shape, lockup feels rock solid. The two complaints I have are 1. the washers, and 2. I'm not sure how I feel about the blade steel, doesn't seem to be as sharp as other Spyderco's that I've bought. Back to the washers, I don't like the smoothness (or lack thereof) of this knife, so I'd like to replace the washers with something higher quality. Would this be possible and realistic? Where would I order the new ones?

My Persistence (same knife for all intents and purposes here) was kinda gritty at first as well. I rinsed out the pivot with some hot, soapy water and then re-lubed with Weaponshield CLP. However, you can use your choice of lube. Now it's pretty darn smooth.

As it stands, they're phosphor-bronze washers...I'm not sure you're going to be able to find a superior washer material for this kind of knife...

You might try polishing them and applying a dot of oil. Should do wonders.

It's possible that there is grit in there from the factory, like somebody else mentioned, a good spray down with soapy water should clean it out, then throw some oil in there and it should be silky smooth.

A touch of lube and a few dozen cycles fixed mine. Try that, and if you're still not satisfied with the performance of that $35 knife, then you can maybe install an IKBS on it. :p

I took mine apart and polished all the washers with Flitz. After that the blade glides right out.

1. Washers (I think you mean "bushings") - IMO it isn't worth the effort. But if you really want to fuss with it, you could try someplace like Jantz Supply. But you'd have to measure the size. See first statement.

2. Out Of the Box sharpness is not a measure of blade steel performance, only of how well the worker who sharpened it did his job.

I find that alittle surprising. I've had mine about a year and a half and carry it most of the time. Mine flicks open as smooth and quick as my Para. I did play alot with it when I first got it and applied a drop or two of CLP. I think that it is the perfect EDC knife. It's wicked sharp thats to Mr Sharp Maker and if I should lose it I'm only out 35 bucks. One hell of a knife for the price.

Cycle it a few hundred times and ad a few drops of oil. Most knives smooth out after breaking in.

for a second i thought the op had teflon bushings........i agree dorito bronze. none better. teflon different story.

Yup. Not real smooth from the box on mine, but my persistence was great. Regardless, both got taken apart and cleaned up inside, CLP'd and put back together. Both are nice and smooth now, will get better the more I play with 'em I'm sure. Both are sharp enough that I didn't worry about hitting 'em with the stone or rod before puttem 'em in rotation. Awesome deals, both, even at $44 for the Tenacious and $36 for the Persistence locally.
