The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Just a little ramble here after re-reading the last couple pages of posts....

Casinostocks Casinostocks , nice family photos. You've certainly jumped into Shiros and the Den with all four paws. ;) I'll take a bit of time and get a new group pic of my current Bears to post, though it'll make me a bit sad as I sold my beautiful Tabargan to fund my F95R. :( I do love the latter knife, though, and carried it the last couple days.

@TRfromMT , I've always pined for a mid-sized Shiro somewhere in between the 95 series and the NeOns. Something in the 3.5ish range with a bit more handle than the NeOn would be both a more discreet carry in certain settings and fit my crippled-up old carpenter's mitts better. The NeOn is still my favorite knife in its size range--its palm swell nestling in nicely--and it's not ungentlemanly in any way, but for a Russian gentleman's knife I usually go with my Cheburkov small Strisch. It's about the same size as my NeOn UL, but barely over 2 oz as a "linerless liner-lock" with CF both sides.

Officer's Match Officer's Match , I'm wondering what you decided about that G10 111? That one's really different. All the 111 talk got me to carry mine today, though I went with my 2nd carry solo to the Dr's office this morning before clipping in the pocket sword as soon I got home.

@Curl of the Burl , I checked out your listing for you NeOn UL, and your ask seems very fair. I paid that much for my UL in S30V, though it was BNIB. Yours is Elmax, which is a plus, though I'm not at all unhappy with Shiro's S30V, having it in my F3 Python as well. From my end, as much as I like "higher end" steel and the Shiro lanyard attachment in their back-spacer knives, I really prefer open-back construction and am perfectly happy with my UL. Of course, given no financial encumbrances, I wouldn't mind having a full stable of NeOn variants like our esteemed colleague and Denizen CPP CPP .

With all 4 paws! A very clever reference to the Bear Denizens ;) I don't recall as to who it was in the past who had suggested that I'd look into an F3? It may have been either you or CCP, but anyway that had piqued my interest till the right deal came along. I used to have all my 4 paws in the past but I found the HatiOn Lite feeling a little too dainty for my personal tastes, so I let it go to another great Shiro fan stealthing around in these forums.

Regarding the 2nd hand pricing, thats a strange one! The NeOn variants whether L or UL were selling for retail even if "LNIB" but then they dropped off a bit but the $ one would lose on those is no where as nasty as the drop off the larger serial Shiros the moment that they leave Recon1. I dunno, maybe the 1%ers among us just dabble in the CD versions or the full on customs, leaving us the plebs to fight for the scraps :p

Well that's certainly not an easy choice, CPP CPP . :( From a practical standpoint, I think I'd have to go with the Hati as it's on washers and I'd hate to have to maintain a bb-pivot knife on a deserted island (assuming there are no deserted knife or hardware stores there). From the point of view of most carried, and probably favorite, work user, I'd have to go with the Turtle--great in pocket and hand, it's my frequent and trusty companion.

Thanks for letting me have my clothes in my marooned condition, as I'd hate to think of what I might have to clip my Shiro to in an au-naturel state.

Q to the experts: is there a Shiro pen which is universally adaptable bits and pieces wise for all modern Shiros or duo the little guys like NeOn L/UL and HatiOn Lite require a different bit size piece? In general, is the Shrio pen worth it and why are some older Shiro pens seem to be twice the price? Was there a change in the Ti construction or something?

This brainfart Q occurred to me since the scenario popped up above about which one Shiro a person would take on a desert island. I can not go without a pen for two reasons:

1- to have the right bits for servicing the SRBS/MRBS varieties

2- to write my memoirs since I always travel to desert islands with a bevy of PB playmates, as my personal detail of course :D

It's hard to argue with any choice, TALON52 TALON52 , and in a survival situation there's definitely something to be said for "bigger is better". Of course, in a jungle isle setting the Python would blend in very easily with the local flora. ;)

BTW, ;) the blue ano on your R series F95T is aging very nicely and looks outstanding! Really handsome knife and it's wearing one of my favorite paracord patterns--King Tut.

I would go with the F3 on my deserted island. There was the Sinkevich designed Shirogorov pen that came with all 4 serial bits and a double ended Sinkevich bit. I haven't seen it up for sale in a bit though. I apologize for overlooking a pen in the hypothetical scenario–how would one write a note to stick in a bottle? All of this preparation anxiety for being stranded on a deserted island, good thing that happens without warning!

An SAK Compact has a pen in it. Barely usable but one could scratch a note on the inside of a coconut shell with some deliberation. Of course my F3 would have opened the giant drupe.

Interestingly, the seller of the white 111 I'm after also has a blueTurtleR...

BUT, does the SAK's pen have a tool inside of it to take the knife apart with?

If I didn't already have my older SRBS Turtle, the blue F95T(R) is the one I would get. My blue F95R pictured above at #1322 is a most excellent piece and the Turtle pattern just adds to the already exceptional ergos of the F95 handle.

Ah, a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside a SAK....

So guys, Sidis Pero lottery finished. Who won and purchased?

New entries to the lottery are now closed but the official retailer said it could take a few weeks to send them off. Or so I tell myself.

I've already seen one on the secondary market at quite a markup
