The Best Way To Hide A Larger Fixed-Blade

A knife won't do you any good if you don't have it with you. I like to carry my favorite knife with me when I go out walking or shopping. My latest is a TOPS Moccasin Ranger which is a 12 inch knife. My last favorite was an Ek bowie (the one with the maple scales) wich was also a full-sized fighter. I like to work with leather, so sheaths are never a problem. In my experience the best way to hide a big knife is to keep it inside your pants, sheath and all.
I've experimented with position and have found that (for me) just behind the right hip works well. It's the most comfortable, and you can sit, even in a car, with no problem.
Any one can make a good inside-the-pants sheath. Take two pieces of thick leather. Make sure the smooth side faces ou on your sheath. If the rough side faces out, it will grab your clothes. Just trace the outline of your blade. Make it generous. Wide helps with this kind of sheath. It keeps the knife from shifting around.
Don't worry about any kind of restraining strap. The pressure of your belt will keep the knife in. Just try not to stand on your head. Drill holes about a half inch apart. Just buy leather shoestringand lace up the holes to join the two halves together. To be safer, and make it last longer, you can use leather rivets (get at Tandy or other leather store. They also sell scraps of leather cheap).
Attach a metal clip by slicing two holes in the front of the sheath and sliding the clip through, or you can stitch a strap across the front to attach the clip. Buy a good clip, the black metal kind with a catch that won't let it slip off your belt.
Wear it and be proud. Get a concealed weapons permit and enjoy a walk with your favorite companion

If the CWP's in my state weren't restricted to the use of firearms, I'd be packing a Cold Steel Black Bear classic. Damn.:grumpy:

Sorry amigo, I dont agree. Ive had problems with this mode of carry for everyday use....for emergency carry, ok. EDC with a big blade can end up with the blade shath and all falling out at say...a supermarket etc.

Knife gaurds generaly do help keep them inside the waist band...but if you lean down/squat you negate much of that benefit.

One mode of carry that works with me is shirt out, knife sheath in front pocket...works ro 5-6" blade dep. on sheath.

if you can make your own sheath, why not make a belt loop that flops down from the lip of the sheath, so the loop goes outside the pants, sheath goes in...and you gain security and purchase on the wepon?

Of course, you could just duck tape it to your leg sheath and all.:D

12" out shopping??? Isn't that overkill??? You'll be lugging it all around with you...you might as well carry a katana on your back while wearing a hooded cloak...

Mike Sastre makes the Southern Comfort to hold big blades.

I have two of them set up for a Laredo in 10 1/2" b;ade length and the Bagwell Belle which is 11 1/2" blade length.

They do not fall out while moving around, they hide under a loose fitting t-shirt with shorts and are quick to get into "play".

Check it out, he's the king of the big blades for concealability and comfort for carrying rigs. He makes them in Kydex and Concealex.

I carry the Laredo on weekends where I am, there is no blade length restriction in this state. Hide em if ya got em.

Another way to carry a big size knife can be a little back pack:D
I carry my ATC Vietnam Tactical in a very compact sized back pack with some survival gear! It's my "bugout pack"...And if controled by the cop it's just a hatchet in a backpack..."Sorry Officer I was on my way to the woods!"

Or what about a belt clip leather sheath w/ snap break to hold the knife?

Oliver: Naughty boy, ,keep that up and you'll make the interpools short list. Be careful..too many danes think like Point 44.

Point 44, ,Man so what if A person wanted to cut open a cantalope to check for mold at Food Lyin'?:D Really man the reason we have these big blades (prefferably double sided) is to augment what ever else we may or may not have to defend our souls.

Brownie: Neat link...you can also make your own Kydex sheaths..all it takes is a toaster oven to heat it up...really rinky dink stuff IMHO but useful.

hehehehehehe yes Tzvi you're sooooo right! but lucky me danish cops are not the best in the world so when I see them I change my way ;)
Imagine! they will need psychological help to get over it if they found my Battle rat and Vietnam Tactical!

What are you talking about tzvi?

I carry a blade with me at all times as well...but 12 inches? That's even bigger than a Battle Rat...

I dare you to carry even a battle rat around with you shopping and see if it isn't cumbersome...

actualy I have my Battle Rat sometimes with me in my bug-out pack...
but yes it's BIG! This is a knife!

See...it is big...and it has to go into a pack...

This guy is talking about carrying a 12 incher inside your pants...

hahahahhahahah....how is that possible????

Maybe i should try carrying my LTC kukri to university....there goes my career in law enforcement...hahahha....

I think Utah meant 12" overall, not a 12" blade. The pics I've seen in the knife magazines dont make the Moccasin look like a 12" blade plus handle.

...I think the best way to hide a Larger Fixed-Blade is to put it under your bed...or maybe in the back of your closet...or you could dig a hole in your backyard...

You have to see the Southern Comfort in action as made by Mike Sastre of River City Sheaths to understand that the long knives are as concealed, actually more so, than say my SnG strider on the pocket.

With the Laredo at 10 1/2" of blade, I can run, jump, bend down, twist, turn, you name it, you can't see the imprint of the blades handle under a loose fitting t-shirt. How do I know? I've had club members say they would be able to see it, and then they can't as I do all the above motions. Sit down? no problem.

If you can hid the sig-220 or something similiar in an IWB, the Southern Comfort will be no problem at all.

It is produced as fast as I can access a gun from an IWB upon demand, and in fact may be faster to point than the gun. As I just got the rig a month ago, give me a few months, years and it will be as fast to present as the guns from IWB. Hell, it's almost there now.

12 inches overall...that's kinda alright...

Where do you put the southern comfort on your body? hmmm...that sentence just doesn't sound right....

I'll give big 10-4 to Brownie's suggestion for Mike Sastre's Southern Comfort rig. Mike is an average size guy and he can conceal a big honkin' Bowie wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I've been looking for it and still had to "bump" him to see if it was there.
Stay Safe,

I wear my Southern Comfort [ SC ] where I would normally wear an IWB gun holster, strong side.

I had Mike make me the rig so the edge is facing forward on the right hip, tucked into the pants. This way, I can use the thumb to hook the covering garment [ like you would with a gun holster ], lift it up and at the same time go palm out, thumb to the inside, grasping the handle and using the elbow and forearm to lift the knife from it's resting place.

It's the same way Bagwell accesses his long knives in the same type sheaths.

I know Mike Sastre uses the standard edge to the rear setup and accesses the knife accordingly.

My shoulders don't have the range of motion they once did, and the way I carry it I am not stressing any joints when retrieving it.

Both ways work very efficiently and it is up to the individual to determine which works best for them.

You aren't kidding when you say that presentation from a Southern Comfort can be fast. Awhile back I was talkin' to Mike at show. I blinked for a second and he had a Helles Belle in his hand. Produced it from under a long t-shirt and shorts too! Mike Sastre is definately the man to go to for concealed carry of large blades.

"12" out shopping??? Isn't that overkill??? You'll be lugging it all around with you...you might as well carry a katana on your back while wearing a hooded cloak..."

With this qoute you were reffering to "mall ninja" status. How do you expect me to react.

So you have a future in "law enforcement"...figures. You already have a them-us additude.

If you are a decent human being you will give up on a fruitless quest to enforce un-Godly and Cruel laws of this century and embark on a
Career that will bring you true respect (Not FEAR).
