A knife won't do you any good if you don't have it with you. I like to carry my favorite knife with me when I go out walking or shopping. My latest is a TOPS Moccasin Ranger which is a 12 inch knife. My last favorite was an Ek bowie (the one with the maple scales) wich was also a full-sized fighter. I like to work with leather, so sheaths are never a problem. In my experience the best way to hide a big knife is to keep it inside your pants, sheath and all.
I've experimented with position and have found that (for me) just behind the right hip works well. It's the most comfortable, and you can sit, even in a car, with no problem.
Any one can make a good inside-the-pants sheath. Take two pieces of thick leather. Make sure the smooth side faces ou on your sheath. If the rough side faces out, it will grab your clothes. Just trace the outline of your blade. Make it generous. Wide helps with this kind of sheath. It keeps the knife from shifting around.
Don't worry about any kind of restraining strap. The pressure of your belt will keep the knife in. Just try not to stand on your head. Drill holes about a half inch apart. Just buy leather shoestringand lace up the holes to join the two halves together. To be safer, and make it last longer, you can use leather rivets (get at Tandy or other leather store. They also sell scraps of leather cheap).
Attach a metal clip by slicing two holes in the front of the sheath and sliding the clip through, or you can stitch a strap across the front to attach the clip. Buy a good clip, the black metal kind with a catch that won't let it slip off your belt.
Wear it and be proud. Get a concealed weapons permit and enjoy a walk with your favorite companion
