Hello everyone, I'm looking to start a project with my cold steel machetes; a Bowie machete that's is being shipped by Amazon and possibly my magnum kukri machete I use for yard work. I'm set on stripping the new Bowie machete to make it look nice. What's the best way to strip the coating off the machete?

I coated mine in a chemical super stripper solution I got from the hardware store. Then put a poor mans duracoat on. Mine gets whaled on regularly, best $20 I can remember spending on a blade.

I should add that after letting the stripper stay on for about 30 minutes the coating wiped right off.

If you want to make a workout out of it, like I foolishly did: Sandpaper.

Then clean it up with some Flitz Metal Polish. Actually comes out looking like it is pictured above.

I use Citrustrip (it's something like that) because California regulations have removed most of the good volatile solvents. On the plus side, it smells like oranges and won't give you a headache as fast. The only thing to add that hasn't already been said is that some chemical strippers, particularly the one I use, can work better when they are warmer. I tried to strip a BK 15 at about 50 degrees outside, and it took longer until I heated the blade up a bit. Citrustrip on a clean blade will also work in a patina if you want to go that route.

I forgot the name, but I used a strong chemical stripper for my Cold Steel tomahawks. When they say it strips the finish off in 15 minutes they're not kidding, because it had started to eat the coating off as it was being painted on.

probably Klean Stripp

I used regular alcohol ($1) on t-shirt rags. Takes about 30 minutes, but you can do it while you are sitting at your computer. I finished up with LIGHT sanding over a waste basket. Sand with the grain of the metal!
