The Billy-can, musket, camping mug/mess kit

Mess kits/Billy-cans are pretty much personal-choice items. Some of us have grown up with the just the coffee can and bail-wire handle, some have had the old WWII canteen cup, and some have grown up and tried to experiment with anodized aluminum and titanium along with different styles and stacking or integrated mechanisms. Bottom line, a good cup or mug that can be placed directly on the fire to boil water is worth its weight.

I think most all agree that a solid mug, cup or pot is high on the list of priorities whether backpacking or placing in your BOB. Now that we’re winding down over here in Iraq and I actually have a little time of leisure surfing, I ran across a site that makes traditional Civil War-era individual cups, mugs and the unique “mucket”. I’m not sure how robust a tin mug is (as some said they won’t guarantee the mucket if the user “destroys” it by having it heated without water), but I like the hobo-design of the lid, bail and handle.

I really like their smaller boiler cup:

I have found a few (I think made in Taiwan) stainless products, especially their larger mugs which come with a lid. Here's the Zebra Stainless Steel cup with lid:

Another mess kit I’ve always liked is the very inexpensive 3-piece German Mess kit (I think I picked mine up from buckshot’s trapping website). It has the integrated bail for hanging directly over the fire. Additionally, it provides some storage for food when packed up.

I also have the smaller coffee can with a bail…it easily nests a Nalgene water bottle. Of course, I splurged on a Snow Peaks 700 Trek large titanium mug that comes with a lid and if you remove the lid, it’ll nest the Nalgene water bottle perfectly. For those with a little love of surplus or on a budget, you can easily outfit yourself with a standard USGI canteen and canteen cup; add the little nesting stove (more for fuel bars than natural fuel), and it becomes a great little package.

For the solo trips or the BOB, what’s your Billy-can setup?

Like fiddleback I hate aluminum if something sticks it is a bitch to clean.

I will take pics tonight but my kit is a medium MSR stowaway pot with a trangia burner, pot stand and windscreen nested inside. My favorite cup is plastic, I am not too big on the metal cups although they are handy for cooking and eating/drinking out of the same container. Chris

I hate aluminum. Thats my only problem with that German kit.

I haven't had too many problems with it...mostly heating soups, boiling water...no major cooking. But I understand the issue with aluminum. My favorite is the older steel canteen cup with the folding handle.

Actually, I've grown an affection to the double-wall ti cups from Snow Peak...just can't cook with them, so they're for the family camping trips where the truck carries the gear:D

I'm real fond of the GSI double boiler set I've got - I have an older model with an aluminum lid rather than the newer fancy lexan lid. It's cheap - $20 to $25 bucks, saves fuel since it's a double boiler so you can heat water in both containers simultaneously, and it's lightweight. Although it's aluminum the anodizing goes a long way in keeping food from sticking.

That billie cup is cool - probably won't replace the stainless steel glacier cup that my nalgene bottle nests it, but it's still cool.

Someday I'm gonna invest in something titanium...

The "Billie Cup" is really nice but the ad said that they are soldered. Solder = lead. Do they use lead free solder?

I currently carry the MSR as well(1/2 liter.) I did get a Klean Kanteen and will experiment with it once the burn ban is over for my area. I think being able to boil water in the container you carry the water in is a slick idea.

Stupid USGI Canteen cup is still my favorite cup of all time. Just can't seem to find something to replace it. I try and try. Just keep coming back to it. For BOB reasons that is. For Long term camping I use something with more capacity.

What is the capacity of it?

+1 on the GSI pots for quality/price. Hard anodized pots in general are good buys.

Brasslite has some great deals and their stoves are the best: http://www.brasslite.com/products.html

Antigravity Gear is a good one too: http://www.antigravitygear.com/categories.php?cat=63

And if you stroll into Kmart, you can buy the Stanco grease strainer/pot for about $5-- about as light and cheap as it gets. You might read of Walmart grease pots, but they discontinued them.

We had a thread on the same subject before... After looking at all the fancy pots. I ended up going to a bargin store picked up a SS pot tried it a few times and it works great. The best part it cost me less then $5. After using it over a fire all i did was wipe it clean and its as good as new.

Got both the USGI canteen cup, which I like a lot and by virtue of a friend in Germany, the German mess kit, which I've boiled water in, but that's about it up to now. By the sounds of it, I'll need to get a small can a PAM for the kit eh? :D
