The definition of Hard Use...Nylatron!

Okay, so I have carried Emerson knives in some tough areas, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kashmir and on many boat and land evolutions as a Riverine.

Today, one of the EOD guys I work with handed me a 2004 Super Commander that he had been using hard and putting away wet for a decade. The edge was blunt as a butter knife as he had been using it to open sand bags, as well as plenty of other mundane chores. I want to emphasize there was not chipping of the edge, just really, really dull. He wanted it re-sharpened. I also took the chance to look at an un-biased users knife on the inside.

now what amazes me is the Nylatron washers. After over a decade of hard use, the washers were undamaged. There was sand and grit inside the knife, but none embedded in the washers. No significant wear and the knife still centers easily, opens and closes smoothly. It should also be noted that he has carried this knife clipped to his rig during waterborne jumps in salt water environments.

I have been debating what to use on some folder builds for hard use, PB or Nylatron. I have enough PB washers to do 4 knives, but can not find the needed thickness anywhere. After this I went ahead and ordered a batch of Nylatron washers from Mcmasterr Carr.

Ernie, I know we talked in the past about knife design and such. Well done once again on the material selection! The definition of Hard use!

I have been using my Mini CQC-7 without lube in the Nylatron washers for a few weeks... And they show zero wear. They're great.

PS: Just wondering, are you at Rota? :P

Regards!

Awesome! Thanks for sharing! I have had zero issues with the Nylatron washer for the past 14years I have been using Emersons.

BTW, I found recently something that works great on my Emerson. Finish Line Dry Lube (the PTFE one, red bottle).

I prefer Finish Line's Extreme Fluoro Grease myself.:D I use it on all sorts of things with great results, almost magical at times.

I am indeed. I live out in Chipiona. Got here about 4 months back, and so far I love it here. Was planning on heading up your way as a matter of fact last weekend, but the weather did not want to cooperate :)

Cool story.. Emersons are great for the simple fact they keep working when others fail.. Once you lose a sharp edge the only thing that will keep a knife functioning is the design of the blade and all of emersons work there intended use sharp or dull..

As Ernie once said, a dull knife is still a knife, a broken knife is expensive garbage

I've only heard things about you brown water boys; you're all insane.

I like that.

might i ask, is there a direct link you can share for this nylatron washers?

i'm quite an idiot with this stuff.

thank you!

I've ordered Nylatrons from McMaster-Carr before too, but they dont have the selection that covers the thickness needed for Emersons.

Emersons use 0.030" thickness Nylatron washers, and I usually get them in the 0.25"ID/0.50"OD size from usaknifemaker. They also have them in 0.015" thicknesses that I sometimes use, and stack them 2 per side. It makes for an unbelievably smooth pivot with hardly any break-in. The problem is, they are always out of stock. I guess I should save some for others :)

They aren't "famous in the worst places" for no reason. I love how darn durable Emersons are and the fact they are so water resistant. Thanks for sharing the story with us.
