Any of you folks watching TV or you just out practicing your winter survival techniques? I saw this movie years ago and noticed it. Not too bad overall. It is currently on the FX cable channel.

The movie was made in 1997 and stars Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin. Very wealthy Anthony Hopkins takes a group to Alaska for his birthday. They decide to take a float plane to another lake (side trip). Plane encounters sea gauls and crashes pretty violently into a lake. All die except for Hopkins, Baldwin, and another actor. Next is to survive as it is winter.

Hopkins is the quiet smart man that is willing to do whatever it takes to survive. Baldwin is the city guy ready to give up. Baldwin wants to kill Hopkins as he has an ongoing affair with his young beautiful wife. They have no food, a few matches, a flare, one large folder knife, and the clothes on their back. Interesting survival situation.

Survival: Build fire; Dry out clothing; Make shelter out of natural materials (not bad actually); give knife to black guy to make a spear to keep him busy and calm... idiot cuts himself badly in the leg... how I don't know. Hopkins does first aid.

Grizzly bear attacks at night and kills black guy (apparently attacted by the smell of blood). Make dead fall to catch squirrel. Start hiking out as no one knows where they are. Make fishing lure and hook, line for thread in jacket... Bear is man eater.... attacks again. Hopkins runs and hides in pile of brush that fell down to keep bear off him. (He would have died here in real life as the bear would not have left it's prey and would have ripped the pile of trees and stuff apart.)

Build more fires for night in hopes they will keep bear away. Bear stalks them... Hopkins decides they have to kill the bear or they are dead. No firearms. They construct spears. Hopkins kills bear (lucky). Eat some bear meat and make claw neckless. Make coats for warmth from bear skin.

Hike and find cabin with some supplies. Baldwin tries to kill Hopkins. Baldwin falls into bear pit and gets stabbed by sharpened stakes in bottom. Later dies. Hopkins is sighted by rescue search helicopter..... gets back to civilization.

Not a bad flick. The stalking bear is the core subplot that makes the movie. But it seems like a fairly realistic survival attempt. Hopkins is resolute on survival. This is central to the psychology of the movie.

Any thoughts? My wish is that IF I was in a similar situaton, I would keep my head and use my brain to survive.

Anthony Hopkins is by far and away my favorite actor!. I like this movie as well. It is a thinking mans movie and for me that is what it is all about in the wilderness.. And the fact that Alec Baldwin dies in the end is just the bonus.. :D :D

i have always enjoyed watching it too. i cant attest to the value or reliability of the survival techniques, but its a fun watch.

my only gripe, alec baldwin is a bit of a whiner, and i get annoyed watching him, but he does die, only not soon enough.

Great movie, never get tired of watching it and Elle MacPherson ain't that bad to look at eighter!!!

I like the movie and agree Baldwin is a Whiner but thats the character they drew up for him. It was on today, I watched it as well(even though I own it).

liked the movie...I thought I was the only one! The deadfall bear killing trick is really cool, but a ruger super redhawk alaskan would be "essential" to my PSK if i was travelling over alaskan wilderness in a bush plane. Really cool movie. A. Hopkins always makes a badass "loner" character.

if you liked this movie, I sugest you read "hatchet" by gary paulsen, a great fictional survival read!

Neat little fact about "The Edge", the custom lockback in the movie was made by Bryan Lyttle, a Canadian knifemaker.

In the final scene, as Hopkins is returned to the lodge by the helicopter, he gets off and walks past 2 Alaskan State Troopers.

The older gray haired one is Bryan Lyttle in a quick cameo shot.

Did you see worlds fastest indian yet? That was a great movie as well, that scene where they race on the beach was the best.

Though I'm certainly no Baldwin fan, I don't think I would change his charachter, he fit the slimy role perfectly.

I don't remember the knife in the movie too well, I never was a folder fan until recently, but now I wish I had after seeing this, from Lyttles site.

I enjoyed the movie too and I've seen it 4 times. The scene where they kill the bear was great, although the bear was slain with a golden BB (falls on Hopkin's braced spear). The best pat was -- by far -- when Baldwin gets pungeed. :) :) :)

That's far and away the best part of the movie..

that movie is one of my all time favorites, I can watch it endlessly! Also it seems that when ever I disassemble and reassemble one of my packs or BOB'S I play that movie...guess it keeps up with what I'm doing!:D

THE EDGE ROCKS!

The Edge is the influence I blame for making me take the expensive step into the world of semi-custom and custom knives!

I wanted a knife like the one in hte movie so bad, but Bryan Lyttle's knives were (and still are) WAAAAY out of my price range.

I ended up getting this Buck 110 from the custom shop to get as close as I could on my budget.

Okay, confession time. I actually bought this DVD when it first came out, even though it was REALLY expensive! I took it home and paused it so I could read the title of the survival book and the author's name. I googled it but apparently it was made up! :o

I love the movie, but they sure tanned that griz hide quickly!
