I've been watching a bunch of Jdavis' youtube videos, and he makes use of a drill collar to account for stone thickness. My question is, brand new out of the box will my Edge Pro Apex 3 need this collar, or is it only useful once the stones get worn? The Edge Pro will be delivered today, but I'm wondering if I need to wait to use it until I order the collar? And for what I paid for it, you'd think the collar would come with the kit! It's like $4!

The drill collar is not necessary - follow Ben Dales instructions and you will be OK.

After you become familiar with your EP and are getting great edges, then you may want to obtain a drill collar.

It's not absolutely necessary, but it saves time. If you are like me, you'll be using your new EP on every knife you can get your hands on. Your stones will wear and will wear at a different rate. You can use the sharpie every time you switch stones, or you can use the collar. The collar is a lot faster.

Some other accessories that I've found helpful are the magnet, the spring, the felt block and the little microscope ($7 - 30X). These don't improve the results, but they do make it a little more convenient and quicker.

I agree with you that a collar should be included with the EP. However, the available drill collars are not intended for use in wet areas. Ben may not have found one that is of sufficient quality to include with the Apex. The one I bought didn't last long. I have a lathe & made my own that is a lot better.

The collar is, in my opinion, one of the most useful additions available for the EP. Use it with an angle cube and it allows a great deal of precicion. Some of my EDC knives are bevelled to 15 degrees per side, with a 17.5 degree secondary bevel.

The angle cube and collar allow for that kind of precision, and additionally, allow good record keeping that will ease the set up of the machine for future sharpening.:):)

And do keep records. They are invaluable as a time and labor saving tool.

I just very very recently got a an EP Apex. What are the collars and other things you speak of????? Pictures or video links would be cool if not to much trouble. Thanks :) :)

Before I got a stop collar, I used a clip.

Check out the youtube videos by jdavis882. He has several on the EP.

The best source for these items is not a Bladeforums sponsor, so I won't post a link.

Can you shoot me an email or PM? I can't send anything to you.

thanks, now i am off too find one. still learning the ep but the initial results are promising. i really did not have much sucess with a lansky system so it was the edge pro or the wicked edge. the wicked edge looks amazing but forgive me for saying it but the price seems excessive.

Set Screw Shaft Collars

Just slide the collar on a shaft and tighten the hex-socket cup-point set screw to secure. Set screw is alloy steel, except for the Type 303 stainless steel shaft collars, which have 18-8 stainless steel set screws, and Type 316 stainless steel shaft collars, which have Type 316 stainless steel set screws.

Black-Oxide Steel—Made of carbon steel. Black-oxide finish offers some corrosion resistance.

Zinc-Plated Steel—Same clamping force as black-oxide steel but with better corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel—Choose Type 303 stainless steel for excellent corrosion resistance. For superior corrosion and chemical resistance, choose Type 316 stainless steel.

Aluminum—Lightweight with good corrosion resistance.

Brass, Nylon, and Sintered Steel Set Screw Shaft Collars

Slide the collar on the shaft and tighten the socket-head cup-point set screw to secure.

Brass—Softer than steel, these Alloy 360 brass collars are spark resistant. Set screw is 18-8 stainless steel.

Nylon—Collars are nylon 101 and are excellent for food and pharmaceutical processing. Set screw is Type 304 stainless steel. Color is white. Max. temp. is 210° F. Collars are USDA, FDA, and 3-A compliant.

Wow that's alot of options for set screw collar!! Just going with something basic that gets the job done. Prefferably the same metal as I assume the shaft on the EP Apex is stainless.

If you get one from McMaster Carr, I'd recommend the stainless. The black steel one that I bought quickly rusted.

The aluminum maybe, but it may not be strong enough to hold well. You may end up stripping the threads. I don't think that you can put enough tension on the nylon collar for it to hold.

I really had to torque down on the black steel collar that I had. And the aluminum collar I made won't hold unless I put a lot of pressure on it. Finger tight doesn't work for me.

I'm looking for some stainless steel to replace the home made aluminum. Easy enough to find, but I don't want to spend any money on it unless I have to. :)
