this isn't a very recent movie, but it was playing on satellite the other night and I was tempted to watch it.

LOL @ running bear.

anyone seen this movie? and what did you think about it?

Its a very entertaining film but far removed from reality of course. For those fellas to survive first a crash in a small airplane and then prevail over that grizzly... not to mention what Hopkins was able to achieve with that little folder... well, its Hollywood so we shouldn't be surprised.

Its a great 'what if' movie, though. As in, 'what if I found myself in that situation?' I sure as hell hope I have more than a folder on me if I ever do!

To watch it alone would be to suffer in silence, but if there's a couple of you to rip the piss out of it...

I did not find it unreasonable what Hopkins achieved with his folder. It looked like a buck 110-a tried and true solid performer in the woods for a folder.

Good movie, lots of action and a reasonable account of a survival situation.

I liked that movie. I especially like the showing how intelligence is key in a survival situation. As to how realisic is it, its a hollywood movie with one of the Baldwins.

I'll third it. I believe I could have done the same with my Buck 110 folder.

As for "carrying more stuff," within the context of the script which featured "sophisticated, civilized" city people, "yuppies," if you will, I do not think you would find real people of that stripe, carrying anything more than they did. It was only that Hopkin's squeeze gave him the knife for his birthday, that he had it at all.

The pilot's survival kit went down with the plane.

I will say that I found it highly unlikely that Baldwin's paperbook matches would have not got wet, even wrapped up, given the soaking they took.

Without these particular "setups" there would have been no real story. (Afterall, if Hopkins and Baldwin had each had a "bugout kit" on their persons, where would the story have gone? Wouldn't have been much to it other than just watching these guys camp in the woods, waiting for a S&R team to come rescue them.)

Plus, I enjoyed the scenery!! Outstanding! :)

My opinion.

What couldn't they have done with the "little folder". Cut the black guy? Shave the fallen trees into a point? Cut the thread off his sweater. I don't really remember the knife being used for anything else.

I thought that the story was great, and seemed to be plausable atleast. Many pilots have survived crash'es just like that, and the birds are the main cause of crashes in Alaska after Engine malfunction. He showed that to survive, you need to use your head, and a folder will do (even if I don't like to admit that) just fine. Even the Bear chasing them is reasonable..if you read Alaskin history, there are several cases of mankillers stalking men for great distances. Overall, I rate it as a great survival story and not a bad movie overall in entertainment. And you get to see a Baldwin Brother thrown into a pit with spikes...who doesn't want to see that. JMO

I'm willing to have some forebearance for Hollywood's poetic license in throwing some luck and set-ups their way. What I really liked was the emphasis on attitude and thinking as the main survival tools.
