This is a really great documentary, by the way. If you haven't seen it, you should. The Ulfberht forge in the 10th century got a line on crucible steel and figured out how to work it - so, these swords were basically of the same quality as Arabian Damascus. This was part of the technological leap that rendered pattern welding obsolete.

So, seriously, check this stuff out - it's amazing stuff.

That's a pretty interesting documentary, definitely worth the watch.
 
I think Windlass makes a fairly inexpensive "battle ready" reproduction.

No longer in production, if you can get one they are supposedly a good bargain.

Nice! Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed that documentary quite a bit, although I would have liked to see more of the final piece when it was completed :(
