Review of The Knife Connection custom ESEE-4 G10 handles (scales)

I have always been a big fan of my RC-4 (ESEE-4 now). It has a great blade shape, just the right size for most tasks in the woods or around camp, with thickness to make it nearly bullet proof. Its just a darn good looking, well made knife backed by a no questions warrantee.

Now here comes the "BUT". :D

I have relatively large hands, while not "beefy" or fleshy, I have long fingers and large palms. I prefer a larger handle on this size knife, and found I wasn't using my RC-4's as much as some others. The RC-3 (ESEE-3) has the same handle, but for some reason it seems appropriate for my hands on a smaller knife like this. Something about leverage, I think.

Recently, I discovered The Knife Connection's custom made handles (scales) for the ESEE-3 and ESEE-4 which many have said makes these knives even better to use, and the aesthetics aren't bad either. I checked the TKC website and saw several good looking handles, but none really jumped out at me for a match with my Desert Tan RC-4. Several colors would work, but I wanted something different. Well, Dale at TKC must have been reading my mind because they produced a Desert Camo G10 handle that is a perfect match for my RC-4. So I picked up a set of scales and recently received them.

The handles came with all hardware, hex wrench, and simple instructions for even this mechanically challenged individual to install. It took only a couple of mintues to transform an already great ESEE-4 into a custom beauty that fits my hand perfectly!

Here are the results!

My avocation (I hesitate to call it a "hobby", as it requires a lot of work and committment to stay proficient) is flying. I often fly over, in, and around some pretty inhospitable terrain including the Rocky Mountains, desert southwest and forest of the Northeast and South. One can never have enough survival gear, but a knife is always high on my list and the ESEE-4 is a perfect companion for the flight bag or better yet attached to my belt or leg.

The ESEE-4 with TKC handle is a perfect addition to a pilot's survival gear.

Those new handle scales seem to fit the palm just right...keep me posted on how they hold up after some hard use. That tan blade with those camo handles are mighty nice. Thanks for the review.

Anytime! The scales are G10, so I suspect they are pretty bulletproof, but I will use them in the field and see what happens. Thanks!

A few more pics!

Do these custom replacement handles fit in the ESEE-4 Kydex and ESEE-3 Molded plastic sheaths? Without modification? I have had my eye on these and have hesitated. Please advise. Thanks. QB

I know the replacement handles fit in the ESEE-4 Kydex, but I don't know about the ESEE-3 plastic. I didn't even have to loosen the set screw on my ESEE-4 Kydex sheath, it just fits a little snugger. I could lossen a screw or two if I wanted to get it back to the way it fit with the original handles, but I like the security of how it fits now. I will try to post a pic of the ESEE-4 with the replacement handles in the Kydex sheath.
