Hello folks.

Lately I have been looking into getting a new knife (read: military-style knife) and the M9 bayonet has piqued my interest. However, I am not sure whether or not I should really buy one. I have heard mixed reviews of them: some are weak and are hard to maintain an edge with, others seem to do what they need to do just fine. If I am going to buy one, I was thinking about getting an Ontario M9. The other part of my question is how good is Ontario's "modified" 420 stainless steel? They also make a variant called the M10 which is made out of 1095 carbon steel.

Just wondering if either of those would be a worthwhile purchase, and if the steel is of a good quality on either of those. If anyone has any experience with those then it would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I had an M9 a while back, and sold it to buy a BK6. I am glad I did. Those M9s are hard to keep an edge on, and are only good for that they were designed for (Stabbing). If you want a knife for cutting, I would not buy any M9. Look at Bark River knives, they are great for many tasks. If you want a good knife for a decent price look at a Buck 119. They can be had for around $30 at wally world (they come with a cheap sheath from wally world). If you want a nice leather sheath, try to find a 119 in a cutlery store.

Best of Luck,
John

Thanks. I was thinking, from the Buck range, that I'd go for something like a 119 or maybe a Nighthawk. Seeing as how there is a lack of things for me to stab right now

What would you think about a KA BAR then? Seeing as how they're not meant to be a bayonet, I'm thinking they could to cutting-type work pretty well.

If you want a piece of bayonet history, buy the M-9. They are a heavy ill feeling knife. If you want a working knife buy a NightHawk, or similar.

Okay, well maybe later I will get a M9 bayonet simply to collect and look at while sipping on a glass of wine...or something.

The Nighthawk looks pretty good to me. The one other knife I was thinking of would be a Ranger Knives RD6. Any thoughts on that one? (I'm not planning on buy the knife right away, this is more in the future when I have a little more money to spend.)

Ka Bar knives are really good for all kinds of work. They have been in use for well over 50 years. They are tough, and take a nice edge. They are made out of Carbon steel, so there will be a little maintance, but it will serve you well for a lifetime. If you want to save some money, then buy a knife I would strongly suggest you try out a Bark River knife. They have the best blade grinds I have seen on a fixed blade in a long time (other than a new 119 I just picked up). If I were you, I would get something like a 119 or nighthawk to use until you have enough money to get what you really like. If you are into knives like most of the members here, I am sure you will have more than just a few knives in your lifetime.

I bought the m-9 just for my ar-15. Hey man you never know when the zombies will learn to use a catapult and BLAM you are face to face with one upstairs. No more shooting them at a distance. You better be ready to do some super stabbing!!!

If you have a rifle to stick it on the the M10 is a good idea .it is much much better carbon steel than the cheap stainless on the M9 and has a better handle. I understand why the military chooses stainless but for a individual 1095 is much better.

The 119 is also one of my favourite cheaper knives and makes a great fighter. It is 420 stainless as well but Buck does an incredible job grinding and heat treating it.

Check out the K-Bars and the Ontario birds head bowies in 1085.

For a good cheap outdoor knife a 15$ Mora is incredible.

Seeing as how I don't have a rifle to attach it to (yet) I will wait to get one. And since there are a few places around here that sell KA BAR's, I'm gonna go get one of those.

Though I like the idea of stabbing zombies...

I've got a Buck M-9 that I bought years ago and I really like it. It has a good edge for a relatively thick knife. The wire cutter works and it also has a sharpening stone on it. Overall I have really been pleased with mine. It's not the best knife out there but what knife is? Alot to owning a knife is enjoying having it just because its fun and I am really glad I have one in my collection.

That's a Buck M9, and those are currently a bit pricier than what I want to spend. I'm more interested in people who might have an Ontario M9, but thanks for the opinion.

LOL
I like your style!!!!

I got a M7 bayonet that I drink Jimmy Beam and Dr. Pepper and gaze at
I don't have a M9 so I can't comment on it
The M7 is heavy, thick, and solid!!!!
Buck 119====>:thumbup:

My friend has an M7, it seems like a decent blade.

Then again, seeing as how I have gotten only one positive opinion of the M9, I'd be surprised if I got any more than that.

Is there anyone else who would vouch for the M10? Otherwise I'm gettin' a KA BAR.
