In our current episode of MAN AT ARMS : REFORGED we tackle our toughest blade yet. Both the forging and the grinding were a true test of our skill.

Keep in mind that we are given 6 days to make 6 builds for a season. The blade turned out pretty awesome. There were some wonky parts but all in all I was thrilled at the outcome.

I hope you enjoy this build,

OK... probably not a great thing that I'm the first guy to catch this post... sorry Matt.. not lookingto make enemies hear but from what the video shows... stopping the quench in the super plastic phase means you stopped the quench while still in the austentite phase... which would then mean that the blade transitions into the fine pearlite phase... the way it was air cooled while straightening means it wasn't austempered to reach bainite or martempered for stress relief before martensite.... so you now have a neat looking primarily pearlite SLO....

Great videography though for advertising to the ignorant... just started a media art program myself and hope to be able to make videos of this quality at some point

Thank you for watching and paying so close attention to the build. Ilya was on the mic during the heat treat and his lingo doesn't always translate perfectly from Russian. You can see while I am straighting that I am wearing thin gloves. The blade was pulled from the quench and was prob under 400 degrees. I will try to be more careful about the terms used I. The future.

We film 6 of these in 6 days and it gets chaotic at times.

Very cool project with some interesting and difficult constraints.

How much did that blade weigh and how did it handle? Video game swords always look impressive, but seem like they'd handle like a sharpened crowbar.

It wasn't too bad actually. Similar to two katanas. I expected the blade to want to turn in your hand during a strike, but it didn't at all. The oval shaped handle, instead of an all round one like pictured in the game, really helped.
