Sure most of you have heard of or seen "Naked and Afraid" on Discovery. For those of you that haven't,,

"1 female and 1 male who meet for the first time and are given the task of surviving a stay in the wilderness naked for 21 days. After they meet in the assigned locale, the partners must find and/or produce water, food, shelter, and clothing within the environment."

The contestants are allowed to each bring 1 item. Usually one chooses a knife/axe/hatchet and the other a fire starter. (but can be anything you want)

You could be dropped in the Brazilian rain forest, a Louisiana swamp, African Savannah, etc.

Lets assume your partner brings a fire starter.

The 2 questions:
1. What is your one item, that you currently own, that you take with you?
2. If you don't own your ideal item, what is it?

My Choices:

1. Mine would currently be my newly acquired Spartan Ares in S35VN @ 58-59RH.
2. If I could take anything it would probably be a 7-12" Busse in Infi. (Looking at you CM ;) )

As often as my BK9 gets left behind on most outings, for this challenge it would probably be my pick.

It chops fairly well and is also surprisingly knife like. Despite its size its balanced well and has a good cutting edge.

Obviously the two contestants are aware of what the other is bringing as I have never seen both of them show up with a knife. It would be hard for me to show up with a fire starter and trust the other person's judgement to bring a decent knife.

I remember one episode where the guy brought a fire starter and the girl brought a small camp cooking pot. He was not thrilled, but it turned out well as they had drinkable water the entire time without getting sick.

I have seen some pretty cool knives on that show.
Great topic deer👍
I don't currently own any good fixed blades. So I'll probably take the one I roughly put together in my garage.

Or anything I could have would be
A busse battle mistress

comically id have to pick my esee 4. why? because its small, sharp, strong, and i can depend on it to cut anything i need to be cut...

This show is one of my guilty pleasures, so I've probably given this question more thought than it deserves.

If I knew I was going to have to hack my way through jungle a good machete would be tough to beat. With that said, in most environments I'd probably face more "small knife" tasks than "large knife" tasks. There are some who say you can do small knife tasks with a large knife, and while that may be true for them, it's not the case for me.

I'd be very tempted to give it a go with one of my Victorinox Farmers (or my Bushcrafter), as I could envision the saw and awl being very useful, but when push came to shove I'd probably play it safe with this little Neesmuk from our own Kelley Ward (HardEdge Knives):

But in all honesty the chances of me ever participating on this show are infinitesimal. I know exactly what it's like to be cold, wet, and bug-eaten. I won't experience this again voluntarily.

Mora Light My Fire is the tool that seems specifically made for this show. Saw an episode where someone had one--as opposed to the typical first thirty minutes where they try to find firewood he had a fire going in two minutes. His partner went and got sunburned I think.

Depends on where I'd be sent. If I'm in the densely wooded forests of North America I'd pick a very different knife than i would if I were in subsaharan Africa, or Asian rain forests.

...like Frailer said..."If I knew I was going to have to hack my way through jungle a good machete would be tough to beat."

I've seen quite a few of these programs, from African savannas to Peruvian jungles, and the machete often seems to be the tool of choice. So yeah, I'd take the machete. It kills, builds, scrapes, and helps to keep you alive.

If you don't own your ideal item, what is it?

Jet powered helicopter. To make it back to the city for some espresso when nobody is watching. I'm a wimp I admit it.

Depending on where I was sent.

Busse KZII with a higher polished convex edge, and handle I shaped to suit me, and stripped.

Works for chopping. Works as a draw knife,

The new Basic 13 is going to be epic, in weight to power and chopping.

I had a B11 that was great, very utilitarian. And significantly lighter than a similar sized knife with Micarta handle.

If I could only pick 1 item it would be my German mountain rucksack.
It's currently full of various items such as a sog seal pup Vaughan sub zero hatchet ...ect , but it's only the pack itself that I'm actually picking.
