Ok noob question time folks.

Somehow I managed to get an el cheapo paring knife stuck in my garbage disposal in the kitchen.
I'm in an apartment by the way.

The part that is stuck is the handle , as if the plastic came off and all that is left is the cheap steel , but it is stuck down in there.
I powered it off and was able to back the grinding wheel back , and I can wiggle the knife back and forth but I cant pull it out , I can get a small hold on it with pliers.

Any ideas ?? The apartments charge to get the maintanence guy to come and fix something like this and I would rather not have to pay :D

Thanks in advance !~~

By the way I am hoping to not have to take the thing apart if possible. :D

if the knife is blade up, put some heavy tape on the blade so you dont get cut, put on a glove and try bending it so you can get a better grip on it. if you need to turn the insides around for a better grip, you can move it through the allen or torx socked cut into the shaft on the bottom. this might even help in getting it out. if all else fails, get out the dremel tool and flex shaft.

grab it with vise grips and start pulling, bending and twisting.

if your like me, you can't fit your hand into the opening.
but i see this as a good thing.

post updates and good luck.

Also look in the yellow pages under good looking lady plumbers.:D

Did you try "the old broomstick trick"? Shove a broomstick down the drain and use it to work the cutters back and forth until (hopefully) the stuck object is freed.

Got to Home Depot and get some needle-nose Vise Grips. They should do the trick, and will be handy to have around.

If you will look on the bottom of the disposal, you will find a hex opening made for using a wrench to reverse the unit and free up whatever is stuck. They usually come with an allen wrench, look around under the sink--Butch

Thanks for the replies folks ! :o

I'll give it a go when I get home from work. :p

:) :D

On most garbage disposals, it is about a five minute job to unhook the discharge pipe, release the locking ring and drop the unit. It makes it a LOT easier to get things out of it.

Good advice..take it apart..Will be much easier and you can inspect to see if any damage was done.

Got the little sucker , long needle nose pliers and patience , I was even able to salvage the knife which I found out after getting it out was one of my favorite little kitchen knives.:D

Thanks folks. !

On a side note , you'd be surprised at the nasties that were dwelling in that garbage disposal.
