Peter Harvey was a Sheffield journalist, who until his death in 2009, was an avid collector of (among other things) pocket-knives. After Mr Harvey’s death, one might suppose that his huge collection of (mainly Sheffield) knives might have been donated to one of the local museums, or else the collection be purchased by them. Instead it was split up into 74 lots and sold at auction, together with the other items he collected.

I only came across details of the auction, which took place in 2012, yesterday, and while I think it is a shame the collection could not be preserved, the auctioneer’s catalogue contains photographs of the knives, which I thought would be on interest here.

There are some real gems, as well as a few modern novelty knives of little interest. The information given about the knives given in the catalogue is sparse I’m afraid. The estimated selling prices are also astonishingly low in some cases. The descriptions below the photos are mainly taken directly from the catalogue.

Anyway, enjoy the pics.

Jack

Thanks for your patience folks, an inadvertantly duplicated pic in the later posts threw everything out from there on, took me a while to get it right.

Thanks Jack, that's quite the collection. Love some of the quill knives and the ivory Wharncliffe is amazing.

Best regards

Robin

Thanks for your patience in posting those, Jack!
It is fun picking out the interesting ones.
I am going to guess that most of the lots got little money, and a few "hit" bigger!

Thanks fellers! It took a while Charlie! I'd agree with you on that guess, even the estimates are low, and I'd be surprised if many of the sales even made those. Whoever sold them would probably have done better registering on Bladeforums and putting them in the Exchange. I wish I'd known about the auction when it happened though! ;)

Never in my time on BFC have I wanted to own an entire page full of shown knives. Jack , I'm drooling, great thread!!

Wow, what a great collection of pocketknives! Thanks for taking time to organize these pics. It was nice to see such a diversity of knives, from commemoratives and curiosities to really finely made tortoise, ivory and mother of pearl.

Thanks guys. Yes Robb, it looks like the guy just bought every single knife he came across :)

Just the vast quantity of different knives is interesting. Thank for your work on this posting. Wonderful to look them over.

That is quite an eclectic collection. I really like the Jos Rodgers & Sons military knife, the MOP leg knife and the champagne patterns. Thanks for posting the photos Jack.

A very interesting collection! Thanks for taking the time to post all the photos! I know what a time commitment that was.

Someone really, really liked knives!
Thanks for taking the time and effort to post this, Jack!

Thank You once again Jack, for taking the time and effort to share another great thread with us:thumbup:
It took several visits to this thread to just take in all of the images. A bit sad to think of this mans collection being broken up and scattered/ sold like that, but I suppose that is the fate of many folks piles 'o things...it looks like he had the bug pretty bad, yep, safe to say he had a " thing" for knives. Seeing so many novelty and souvenir knives leads me to think that he must have grabbed some here and there in his travels. I'll be spending some time this evening just looking through all the great pics again...

Thank you soooooooooooooooooooo much for your hard work in posting this.

Much appreciated

Syn

Thanks guys, glad the pics were of interest. I'm sure the owner would have been very happy to know his knives are being appreciated in this way :)
