The stave is leaned - that is why the compass seems tilted and not riding on its bearing properly.

Seems like a REALLY cool compass. Smaller than a dime - made from brass - aout 1/4" tall by 5/8th" diameter. The dots illuminate at night and two dots point north.

I set it in my walking stick using two part Epoxy putty and then put one small stripe of black paint over the epoxy to seal it and allow to match the compass housing.

The stave is not round - so I simply set it to the center ring of the wood - I think it turned out cool. Now I need to wrap the handle and I am done.

My plan is to wrap the handle and set the ends of the wrapping in Turkshead leather lashings. The problem is - I don't know how to tie a turks head. So I am learning.

Nice i like it. I was going to suggest brining a back up compass. Does any one know if carrying 2 different style compass can give you in inaccurate read??

jar axle I'm no expert on compasses but the ones I have all read very close to the same. Close enough to point me in the right direction anyway.

Talfuchre, that looks real handy. Got pics of the whole staff? I'm messing around making one out of an oak staff I picked up and need some ideas...

Got one of 'em too.. Not mounted on a sweet hiking stick though.. I like the idea of wrapping the handle and finishing it with a Turks Head knot.. PLease post pics of the work in progress, and the finished product! Nice job!

Would the constant striking on the ground just make it fall apart after a while?

Let us know how well it holds up..

Honestly - this is going to be used on soft ground - but it may break after much use. However, I have read a few reports of people swallowing them - and many on this board always have one in thier pocket - I am sure that is comperable. - I am not fearful. ;)

Thanks Mike - I will take pics and hopefully pass along some knowledge.
