The most useful coatings are Titanium Nitride (Gold TiN), Zirconium Nitride (Champagne ZrN), Titanium Aluminum Nitride (charcoal TiAlN), and Tungsten Diamond Like Carbon (black WC). In the photo I have written the HRC’s (Hardness Rockwell C Scale) of each knife’s blade on the handle.
If you are touching up a blade containing Vanadium Carbides at 82 HRC, like S-30-V or S-90-V, you may want to use either ZrN or TiAlN. You can even use the process to touch up a coated edge (BuckCote). Just make sure that the edge to be touched up is softer than the sides of the “finishing steel”.
All 4 of these coatings can be used for 420 HC.
