Thumb studs?

A boring detail, but hey its CRK, so it has to be discussed......

I am trying to figure out the deal with the thumbstuds. Currently there seems to be a few versions out there and I can't figure out the rhyme or reason to it. Some have the recessed cone on the back side, and some are flat. Some seem to be more pointy and some are round. My dual stud large Insingo has one side with a rounder stud, and one that is more pointy with a small flat spot on the opposite side. My single stud 21 has the recessed cone on the back, but some new large 21s also seem to have a flat back.

What gives.....is there a thumstud timeline expert out there?

Never realized they were using the flat sided ones again? I thought they were using just the ones with the recessed cone. I def prefer the flat sided studs. Really looks slick/flush with the blade.

The 25 uses more of a blunted stud type it seems.

CRK has changed the thumb studs over the years. The style from the P Sebenza were always my favorite. They were smooth all the way around with several grooves cut into them. They then went to the style that had the grooves all the way around, but there were several grooves. Then they went to the same style, with less groves around it. Some of the older studs were pointier, since then, they seem to be slightly flatter and not as pointy.

Haven't bought a 21 in a while, but the last few I got have the "recessed cone" on the back side (which I prefer).

OOPS.......I must have misread your question as my original post was about the thumbstud itself.....lol. As for the backsides, I have noticed several differences. Some have a slight chamfer, while others are flat. Some also have the small recessed dimple thing. I don't know the rhyme or reason behind them. CRK is always evolving and trying new things.

What I find interesting is that CRK does (or did not used to) call them "Studs" but "Thumb Lug" so is they studs or is they Lug's? It does not appear to me that they are mentioned unless the particular knife has "Double Thumb Lug" which is noted on the box label and the Card.

Flat back and pointy front thumbstud on my small inlay from 2013.

That's funny, my dual stud (lug) is opposite. Its probably just luck of the draw with the dual lugs on which one goes on which side when the press them in. I imagine one is male and one is female internal to the blade, as I think they must join.

I can't think of any other use for the studs in industry. My guess is they make them in-house.
