Tightening Loose Handle

I'm in the process of refurbishing my dad's knife. It is a Remington with a stacked leather handle and a metal pommel. The pommel is loose and I'd like to tighten it. From the picture below, you can see that it looks like it might be a screw-on type fitting, but since I'm not 100% positive, I'm not going to risk breaking it.
Do any of ya'll have experience with this type of handle?
Any advice on how to tighten it?

Here is what the knife looks like.

It is a screw. You can modify a screwdriver to fit it. If the nut won't tighten, it is bottomed out.

You can use the tips of a needlenose pliers or Leatherman as a 'screwdriver' and just snug that brass nut down. I removed the stacked leather grips on my Marbles blades and treated the tang with BreakFree before reassembling. SnowSeal works great on the leather.

Thanks for the quick responses.
I don't have the tools to modify a screwdriver and the needle nose pliers don't fit. I plan on taking it off, cleaning (and possibly replacing) the leather and putting it back together.
Any other suggestions?

I have an Ontario Air Force Survival Knife with a stacked leather handle. When I got it, the handle was loose. I also noticed that the leather was very dry.

I globbed on some mink oil (sold in the shoe section of most department stores) and left the knife in a warm place. The mink oil soaked into the leather, both conditioning it and causing it to swell. The stacked leather handle was no longer loose.

I'd try this before any other methods - if it doesn't resolve the problem, it won't hurt anything, either.

The scissors worked great. Thanks.

That is what I was planning on doing. Thanks. I'm working on it more tonight. As soon as I get it back together, I'll post pics.

I finished it!!

I took apart the handle and cleaned everything up. I then started with 220 grit sandpaper and worked my way up to 600 grit. I then mink oiled the leather. I spent about a half hour using MAAS metal polish on the blade and handle.
There were some deep rust stains and scratches from a grinder that I couldn't get out, but it looks MUCH better.
Tomorrow I'll sharpen it, but I'm off to spend quality time with my wife for the rest of the night.
