I just wanted to tell you guys real quick that you got to check out Tim Lively's new video. I got a sneak peak at it this week and it is full of cool information. I know the unplugged route is not everyone's cup of tea, but the lessons on smithing alone you learn in this video are well worth it. Not to mention, the sand casting and sheath-making is really informative as well. Tim's wife Marian had some real neat tricks on the casting and sheathmaking as well. You should check this one out. Plus, the knife he makes is a beautful monster of a blade :D :D :D It's at www.livelyknives.com

I received the video so fast I was amazed.
Excellent video, very informative, and very entertaining. I be a hardcore tool-boy, but gonna have to try that approach someday...Tim sure can hammer..

Mike,
Isn't the knife he made cool? The "Bear Spanker" he calls it :). By the way, you're in Waukegan? I just moved to Oak Lawn on the south side of Chicago. If I'm not mistaken that's not far from you at all. We should hang out and do some unplugged smithing sometime.

Tim

Hi, Tim,
Yes, Waukegan is probably 50 miles up the tollway from you. And, yes, I really enjoyed the knife Lively made; that hammer-to-shape and finish is very intriguing. I have a gas and a coal forge, but no way to make any natural charcoal, there being a burning ban in Waukegan. Are you aware of the American Edge Collectors Annual Show down by you September 13, 14, 15? It is the largest show in the Chicago area each year, and draws a good collection of custom makers.
Yes, perhaps we can get together sometime and have a hand at some forging; I don't do well in heat, so I won't be doing much serious pounding until cooler weather. Perhaps in the fall?
Take care.

Now how do you manage to see a video unplugged? :D :D

No really, i didn't see it and probably won't ever, but i know that Tim is a really good bladesmith and has to teach something. And i saw the blade somewhere. Cool stuff, utility sized for city use. :D

Thanks!
There's a photo of it here;

It's 17 1/2 inches overall with a 12 inch blade. The blade was forged out of 5160 with a hammered finish. There is less than 3 percent stock removal and most of that is in the tang and the shoulders where the guard rests. The guard and buttcap are mild steel. The handle is Sonoran Desert Ironwood and the seamless fittings are .900 silver.

Thanks Bro, I see why you called it Bear Spanker!

I read an article about hunting bear in the south with a bowie knife.

Sic the dogs on em and the hunter dispatched the bear with the Bowie:eek:
