Timascus for carry - how well does it wear?

Hello all,

Just upfront - I have a Spyderco that I use for virtually all my cutting needs, which are minimal as an office dweller. That said, I f'n love to carry my nice knives. I will never use them other than to play with while I am on a conference call in my office.

Now that is out of the way - I am starting to pick up some timascus knives. How well does it wear being in just a pocket with nothing else? Does it easily fade out? If it does, how hard is it to get it back to its original beautiful finish?

I did some searching and couldn't come up with any info. Thanks in advance!

It does not fade easily. Most timascus is colored with heat. Its really not a color you are seeing but rather a neat trick played on the eye by refracted light. When you heat tomascus and titanium an oxide layer of titanium builds on the surface. This layer is completely tranparent. Depending on the alloy and the thickness of the oxide layer it will refract different colors to your eye while not having a color of its own. This layer is harder than the titanium itself and is more resistant to scratching.

If it does scratch the beauty is you simply buff it out and re heat it and its good as new. This can be done nearly infinite amounts of time because you are adding the layer and only removing just that layer through buffing then putting it right back on again so if care is taken your tolerances will not sufficiently change. If its not polished you can chemically etch the timascus which will remove that oxide layer. In that case i would mask hreaded holes and bearing or washer surfaces.

This is outstanding information!! Thank you so much for this. Pretty much everything I needed to know!
