Hello again ladies and gents. As usual, it's been a while since I've logged in to the bladeforums Axe and Hatchet page. I hope everyone enjoyed my last post with the Plumb Scout Axe Timeline paper I did. So far it seems to be getting decent reviews. I'm glad many of you are finding good use for it.

So today, I realized I have not posted the paper I did on the Bridgeport steel handled hatchet. I put this paper together about 3 months after I did the Plumb paper. It didn't take me near as long as the Plumb paper did since there were only a handful of models produced. I hope you find it as useful as the first paper. Thank you all for your support. :0)

Here is the google drive link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/123mrKATPEtd2BpbGwptnLat-loq10tLW/view?usp=sharing

In case you missed the first paper, here is a link to it. This is for the Plumb Boys Scout axes: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kG5H73Hp4hWSRFjtEph8i06kvXttUQTK/view?usp=sharing

Again, I recommend you download the paper in case this link ever becomes unusable. I have both papers stored on my phone so I can reference them while out hunting new (old) axes.

Hi, Thanks for your research and sharing the information. I recently acquired one of these Bridgeport Scout hatchets from my father in law, and was trying to sort out how old it is. While it appears to fit into your general description of '49-55, and '56-58, it does have some differences. The first thing is that it is not green, it it blacked steel, which might eliminate '56-58. The second is that there is no evidence of yellow text proclaiming "official scout ax" on the shaft, and the blackening of the steel is in good condition, so it hasn't worn off. The last thing is the manufacturer's stamp on the shaft reads:
B'PORT HDWE. MFG. CORP.
BRIDGEPORT, CONN. U.S.A.

Have you encountered any stamped in this way?

Thanks, Brad

I ended up restoring this hatchet.
According to his compendium, it must be between 1929 and 1931, without the release of the patent. Because it only has the Bridgeport marking on the left face.
I only have these pictures on my cell phone now, I'll take more decent pictures to show you.

Great timeline report. Hi, I love and refurbish these hatchets. I am trying to perfectly replicate the replacement scales. I bought a router to cut that channel on the handles so they will fit in the steel perfectly. I am learning about routers but wonder if the 1/8” bearing would cut that little channel?
Also I do make sheaths. I want to get them perfect for these hatchets. Any one have a templete i could buy. I have made my own but they just don't look perfect - yet.
Thanks, Susan
