Tip strength of Celefontaine

Hello all, In my never-ending search for the perfect knife, I think I'd like to buy a Celefontaine. However, I took a look at RC hardness, and it was listed at 59-61. I'm a little concerned that it might a little more on the brittle side. Are any special precautions taken to keep the fine tip strong? Has it been strength tested? I'm not a knife abuser, but I am concerned what will happen if I accidently drop it or something. Thanks. Ed

Do you mean Centofante? If so I have a Jr. and am very happy with it. I think you would have to try and break it. Although, I admit mine hasn't seen any heavy work.

The Centofante's tip can be bent but generally it is safe to use. I bent mine when I dropped it. For a while, I went through a streak of dropping knives and dinging their tips, in one year I my Centofante, Starmate, and BM Stryker and bent their tips on my hard tile floor!

I think that 59-61 RC is right where most knives with good blade steels fall. I don't think it would be any more or less brittle than most other Spydies. Maybe if the tip is exceptionally thin, that might be a cause for concern. However, I've never personally seen the tip on a Centofante. I'd guess that as long as you weren't prying hard with it, it'd be just fine. Of course, dropping it on the floor could still blunt the very tip, but that's got less to do with the Rockwell scale and more to do with the physical dimensions of the tip.

I had one of the earlier desings with the Al handles. In a fit of sheer stupidity I stabbed it repeatedly into a medium-soft plastic container (clothes hamper actually).

I was testing it and a Delica... In any event the tip bent a bit but did NOT crack or break off.

Don't do anything stupid with it and you'll be fine, it's a great knife!

While attempting to pull a broken key out of a lock, I broke about a 64th of an inch off the tip of my small aluminum handled Centofante. I think most people, even forum members would be hard pressed to see the difference, but it is no longer the ultimate splinter puller.
