Tip up or Tip down

I picked up a 556-1 mini griptilian a few weeks back. It has turned into my edc. The other day I decided to really get a great edge on it.

I ran out for some errands earlier today and reached into my pocket to retrieve my truck keys.

Yup, you know what happened.

So I reached into my pocket to get my keys, and pocket knife had opened. Literally shaved the finger nail off my pinkie down to the meat.

Now I know why some people prefer tip down carry in there pocket.

I carry all of my knives clipped and otherwise with tip up, spine of the blade is rearward against the back of the pocket or sheath. The back of the handle is all that is exposed to the interior of the pocket so that is all my hand or fingers contact when I reach into my pocket. Never have had any surprises or incidents with this position of carry. And it’s already in position when I remove the knife to open it.

Never, ever had an issue in 40+ years of tip up carry.

I've been carrying for 46 years...
First were unclipped knives that pretty much went where they wanted. What I remember most about moving to knives with clips is that, for a while, they were all tip down.

The only times I've ever encountered an open blade in my pocket were 1) carrying an early (soft detent) 0560 loose in a jacket pocket, and 2) when the TSA d____gs screwed with the auto in my checked luggage (I bled all over my pants when I found that one).

Tip-up by default, especially for any knife with a lighter detent (like the average Benchmade). Tip-down if it feels right for the knife, like the Spyderco Military and Microtech Socom Elite.

I carry my BMs in my right pocket, clipped with spine facing the back. That pocket never has anything in it other than my knife.
Anything else goes in my left pocket or shirt/jacket pockets.

I've been cut a few times that way.

The trick with keeping the knife against the back seam of the pocket does help. However, I prefer tip down because it's easier for me to get the grip I want.

Tip down seems so logical... Like : grab your knife by the pivot, swing out the blade... Ready. I carry all my folders (friction, flippers, studs, holes or whatever... tip down). I see absolutely no reason to carry tip up. Sorry.
