Ive heard before that the older you get the more tendency you have to want to carry smaller knives (slipjoints, ect.). Well dont misunderstand I do like tactical folders, but the older I get it seems I would rather carry a slipjoint!!! When tactical (one handers) folders came out in the early 80's, the spydercos, tak fakuta's ect. I was quite excited. Since then Ive enjoyed both those and the traditional slipjoints. Now Im finding that I prefer the slipjoints, epecially when collecting (I collect both). when it comes to carry, a sak, or similar sized slipjoint is fine with me!!! Big seems to be out, and reasonable size seems to be in!!!!

I suppose I am getting older :) !!!

I think you bring up a good point rev. Most of the tasks that I need a knife for (unless I am out in the woods) are accomplished easier with a smaller knife.

Not to mention walking around in an office with a tactical. I get enough grief over the little 'uns I have around.

I still enjoy using and occasionally shopping for the tacticals. Thankfully there is enough room in our little knife world for all types.

Well my EDC´s have been just about the same for over 40 years so I guess I´m not getting old.

I do have some tacticals. I´ve just realized the one I like most is about 4 inches long when closed, and I like it because it fits well in my shirt pocket. I hardly ever carry it and then it is in addition to my SAK and stockman.

Longer knives have their place but I guess not for my urban EDC.

I'm really starting to become a stockman fan. I just got my first trapper, and am going to carry that for a while, but don't think I'll like it as much. I'm going to give it a fair chance, though.

The only problem that I have with slipjoints is the weight and bulk in the pocket. Combined with everything else, it's just too much for me. I'm thinking of trying to sew a nylon belt pouch, and see how that goes.

Pocket clips are ugly, but they are functional...

They do get heavy once they pass 3.5". maybe one of these days we will start seeing TI frames and bolsters. (Not holding my breath on that one.)

i used to carry my Spydie Military and Chinook fairly regularly....

but i'll tell you, my Baby Butterbean finds it's way into my pocket more often than anything else these days. it does 99% of my knife chores and just disappears in my jeans watch pocket .

then there's the Scrade mini-stockman that officially lives in my jacket pocket.

I always have my Middleman in my pocket but I like having my CRKT around because I'm not too afraid of hurting it. I keep thinking about a Buck 110/112 for a hard use folder. The clip blade is far more utilitarian than tanto or spearpoint. Maybe I'm getting old, too.

I understand where you are coming from. I'm still not putting down my Sebenza but I am starting to carry my slipjoints more and more. In fact, this past weekend, I bought my first custom SJ; a pen knife from Jeff Cover in ATS-34 with sheep horn scales. Beautiful knife from a great maker.

I find myself carrying one of each now days. Sj's are nice for small cutting jobs and I'm now convinced that the artistry in a sj is more impressive than tacticals. However, when you need a knife in a hurry, or with only one hand free, you just can't beat a tactical. There is a good reason that the thumb stud opening, pocket clipped tactical evolved from the old fashioned nail nick openers.

I know what you mean eddie! I do like to carry a tactical when Im hiking (and I find a camillus edc is a good small alternative to the bulky), but I find its not the same, nor seem right wothout a whittler too ;) !!!

Just goes to show it doesn't have to be one or the other, I usually carry one of each too. A CS Trailguide clipped to my pocket, and the stockman which keeps moving from pocket to pocket, trying to get comfortable...

The big revelation came to me on my son's first cub scout camp out. There I was, sitting around with some other dads and kids, whittling on some sticks, and I pulled out a Tighe Pan Stellite with a 3.75 or 4 inch blade. It was the only knife I had with me, and it was absolutely terrible for whittling. Not the knife's fault...it is still one of my favorites, but its just not made for whittling. Ever since then, I carry a small utility type knife/slip joint multiblade and a larger tactical weapon.

I found out on my last camp trip that a benchmade 721 makes a decent whittling knife when you dont have many options ;) ............a real whittler is much, much better though!!!! :)

When you have as many knives as all of us have, the last thing you want is to "make do." ;)

well Eddie it was that or my benchmade 180 outbounder, or my knifeware kampr!! the rest were at home, all ...........of them.

Even though I carry a tactical folder every day I always have a stockman or a trapper in my pocket. It sees more use than whichever tactical folder I am carrying at the moment.

Also a tradition pocketknife does not seem to unnerve people as much as a tactical folder. In my civilian job that is a major thing that I have to deal with. There are times that whipping out your tactical folder is a bad idea.

your right will!!

everything right now when it comes to knives is questionable to most people!!!.....seeing a one hander being whipped out can raise some eyebrows!!!.....
