tired of waiting for the copper natrix?

Well, I want the copper natrix(like many of us)... it seems like it's been taking forever. (I also wish it wasn't d2 steel, if they wanted to keep to a budget natrix price, I'd love to see 14c28n)

But anyway... so I was browsing for copper handles, and I found this southern grind spider monkey, wow
(I only wish the 'ramp' on the spine of the blade was not so pronounced / elevated, otherwise it seems almost perfect)
of course, the price is about 5x the natrix :(

anyone have one already?, how is it?

Not tired of waiting at all.. Good things take time!! :D John

I’ve handled one at a local store, and I think it was a damascus variant. It’s a fine knife, but, honestly, the price is far past the point of diminishing returns. There’s nothing that knife can accomplish that nearly any $100-200 S35VN knife cannot, aside from develop a handle patina.

If you’re hungry for a copper handle, you can just get custom copper scales for whatever knife you favor. Copper isn’t a precious metal, nor is it particularly expensive or difficult to machine.

I own a copper Southern Grind Spider Monkey and it’s an awesome knife. The handle develops a beautiful patina. The beauty of copper is that all scratches patina quickly and blend right in. It’s almost like a self healing handle finish.

The thumb ramp isn’t really that pronounced. The curvature on the top of the knife fits the curve of the meaty part of my palm perfectly (fleshy pad next to the thumb). My thumb just sits naturally on the ramp. Excellent ergonomics all around even love the short pocket clip.

I owned a carbon fiber Spider Monkey and sold it off. Nice quality, but the copper variant really makes this knife feel so much nicer. Well worth the $ upgrade.

The Copper Spider Monkey is extremely well made with the hydraulic feel of a Sebenza. The fit and finish is is outstanding. The parts fit very tight and lockup is excellent with no play and perfect blade centering. Made in the USA too!

Pretty funny how people will shell out $400 for an S35VN Sebenza but any other knife with the same level of fit and finish and material quality costing 40% less is over priced.

For me the copper variation of the Spider Monkey was too heavy; 5.4 ounces vs. 3.2 ounces for the CF. It totally changed the dynamics of the knife for me. Also the milled ridges on the CF seemed “gripper” than the ridges on the copper handle. I stuck with the beautiful CF and passed on the copper.

Honestly, if you’re itching for a copper knife, grab a Skyline or PM2 and pick up some copper scales from Flytanium.

The copper natrix? No, thank you - too darned small.
The copper Spider Monkey? I've had one for a while, and really like it. A augustus88 referenced it having the hydraulic feel of a sebenza...I had to smile because I've made that exact comment when talking up this knife. Interestingly, I find that the cf version has a somewhat different feel... so the extra $60 for the copper was worth it to me.

How do you like the copper Boker Kwaiken? Been seriously thinking about picking one up.
Opens envelopes just fine, action is fine. A others mentioned both weigh more than I care to carry; you will notice any sizable copper knife in comparison to my normal EDC blades that rarely push 4oz.

I am happy with my copper PM2, but I might get the natrix as a gift still.

Given their history with the Natrix they're bound to screw it up somehow...also I don't know why they shrunk it to 2.75"

Anyone know how long till the copper natrix is available to actually order?

Also, what do you think the chance is they'll release a standard size 3 1/4" blade instead of the 2 3/4" initial-mini-only-offering??

Cool. I have no problem believing this.

Yeah you lost me at the part I highlighted in Bold.
I'm sure it's a great knife. And very well done indeed.

But CRK take a lot of extra steps to ensure exactness of their fit+finish. If it would have the same level...it'd be priced the same. Especially since they're made in the same country.

from which site? I just checked a couple, and it's still listed as 'pre-order'

I really don't want to derail this thread too much further by talking about CRK and Southern Grind, so this will be my last post on here mentioning anything other than the copper Natrix as mentioned by the OP.

My experience with a large Sebenza 21 was less than stellar. The lock was defective right out of the box and CRK took 2 months to fix it. The fit and finish of the repaired knife was excellent, but honestly my WE Knives are just as good if not better (parts fit tighter yet perfectly precise). Sorry, but I stand by the Copper Spider Monkey having just as good of a fit and finish as CRK or pretty darn close. The price difference is due to the over inflated price of CRK knives. Not a popular opinion on this site, but I'm just basing it off my personal experience with my Sebenza. I will agree that the CRK screws are nicer because they're not proprietary.

That’s what's kept me from wanting a copper knife. I think copper could make for very cool accents like a pivot collar or a clip or even small backspacer or standoffs. I would definitely like to see more of that.

But on most knives especially larger ones with thick handles I just think the weight would be obnoxious to carry. According to Flytanium’s website a Skyline with copper scales is

Of course YMMV, some people like the feeling of a heavy knife. 5.68(!) ounces. And the Skyline is a slim knife.

Are you saying the copper Spider Monkey is built differently from the CF Spider Monkey? This is the part that confuses me because my understanding is they're made at the same place with virtually interchangeable parts. Is there something they're doing different with the copper version because the Spider Monkeys I've handled were nowhere near CRK quality. I don't see WE quite making it there either...I see WE more in line with Taichung Spydies and ZTs.

BHQ... Still listed as pre-order but the order form I got for pre-order is listed as "Being Processed" ...
