Titanium Glasses Frames

This isn't about knives, but I figured that you guys would have an answer for me. If this should be somewhere else, feel free to move it to the appropriate place.

My mom recently broke her glasses frames, which were made out of Ti. She was wondering if there was anyway to fix the break, as the frames she got to replace them basically suck. They broke right where the part that holds the lens meets the nosepiece.

I think they would be about 90 bucks to replace, but if there was a cheaper fix, it would be much appreciated as my parents are retired teachers without an unlimited budget.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I'd try JB weld. Titanium can only be welded with titanium, and then only in an inert gas.

Careffully roughen the broken ends and put on a layer of JB Weld. Then carefully sand down the JB to match the frame contour. Protect the glass with tape.

If she hasn't had the glasses long take them back and complain, at least you may get a discount. JB weld is good stuff my father used to fix his dentures with it.

That part of the glasses has a small area and bears a lot of abuse, so I would think JB Weld wouldn't fix them for long. The problem with titanium is that it has to be welded in an oxygen free envirnoment, so it is usually done with a TIG welder in an argon gas flow. About the only people I know of that would have such equipment lying around are custom bicycle framebuilders who use titanium. Unfortunately they're not really found on every corner! You may try the metal arts department or industrial technology department at area colleges. It's wortha try. Good luck! Also check out that warranty possibility...

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure they are out of warranty by now, she's had them for a while. I might look for some JB Weld and give it a shot, but I don't know if it would work or not. I didn't think about asking around the college--since I live on campus it should have been obvious to take a trip down to the machinist and ask. Hmmm... too bad I don't know of any custom bicycle frame builders in the area, only knife makers.

Thanks again.

I've broken my Ti frames a few times as well. According to the few eyeglass repair shops in town, the eqipment that's needed to fix the frames costs so much that the cost per repair would exceed the cost of new frames. I guess that's one of the drawbacks of titanium frames...

Hey, if they are hollow frames a bit of steel wire pushed in the tubing and then JB weld.
