sorry for the dumb question but is titanium nitride coating supposed to be a dark shiny color that reflects a blue/purple/green tint in the light? or is it a flat gray?

I have some Kobalt brand titanium nitride coated utility knife blades that are gold colored. I have an Eddie Bauer folder that claims a titanium coated blade (I presume it too is Titanium Nitride) that is a very shiny, slick and black colored.

Titanium Nitride, TiN, is gold.
Titanium CarboNitride, TiCN, is flat gray.

Good question. not enough information for me to say.
Any other information about the knife itself? Country of origin, actual maker, model name or number. Was it advertised as a Ti coating?

its a crkt m16-10k. i just picked it up on ebay so not really sure how the knife is supposed to look. in the pictures its just looks black haha. its advertised as aus 8 steel with titanium nitride coating

I think a lot might have to do with what the manufacturer had in mind. Buck has more than one look and Kershaw also has different looks. I think I've seen them from a shiny blue to a flat black.

I think you have Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN) coating.

A lot of times companies don't give the full names of things because they think people don't care. Shucks, a lot of people don't care what it is called as long as it works. It takes a knife knut to care.

BTW, welcome to BladeForums.

I've got a Buck Mini Alpha from Cabelas that has a S30V blade with a Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN) treatment. To the casual eye it is black. Looking closer and moving it under an incandescent light you can see some purple and green hues.

I've got a REKAT Hobbit with a green coating that I was told was some formulation of titanium; maybe it wasn't ripe.

That describes the Eddie Bauers coating nearly perfectly.

No clue who the actual maker is, advertised as being titanium coated. The appearance sounds almost exactly like the Buck's though.
