TM Hunt Pen Pal Apprenticeship. A Knife WIP! Part 2

Awesome stuff!!

Really like the file jig your using. Watched a video the other day of a guy showing how to make it. I need to grab me the materials to make one of them eventually.

I especially love the picture coming out of the oven!! I always love seeing a knife glowing red like that. If i had a picture like that of a knife i made it would be my wallpaper LOL

Minor update. Todd sent me a picture of my knife after he cleaned it up and surface ground it post heat treating. He took the time to get the RC hardness correct and kept me in the loop of the progress.

It should be on it's way back to me soon so I can add some handles to it. Thanks again Todd!

Damn.

Thanks guys!

I have had some good help and advice along the way. That helps a lot.

My first attempt at making handles the other day was a bust. I must not have been paying attention when I drilled out the holes and was left with a huge gap where there should have been wood. I was really upset with myself that I wasted material.

Went back to the drawing board tonight with a different game plan and had better results. More pictures later.

That is looking really nice Jeremy - definitely does not look like a first attempt. I'm looking forward to seeing this next weekend. No pressure. ;). Just....uh, never mind.

Thanks guys! No pressure Mike..... LOL

Here is the next part in my knife making journey. I got the knife back from Todd. I had to sharpen it, prepare it for handles and make the handles.

I sharpened it and then dulled it a bit so it would be more safe to handle.

Here are some pictures and videos of where it is at now. Feel free to critique my work and or methods. I am always striving to get better.

Working on handles. Since I screwed up the first pair I took my time and drilled the holes before I cut out the shape of the handle.

Here is the look I am going for with the maple handles using Aquafortis, walnut stain and tru oil. This is hard to capture on camera and of course looks better in the sunlight.

Here are a few videos of the process.

Tomorrow I will be hitting it hard and shaping the handles. I am not going to go overboard with the contours, I just want it to be comfortable.

More pics and videos to come.

Thanks for everything guys.

LOL, actually a lot of the work on this knife I was barefoot. If I am not at work and it isn't frickin cold I am either barefoot or have sandals on. Sometimes minimalist running shoes like the Vibram 5 fingers or the Merrell trail gloves.

I hate socks and shoes that confine my feet. When I get home my shoes come off ASAP and do not go back on unless it is an emergency.

Thanks for the kind words on the knife.... LOL

Jeremy

LMAO!!

I also HATE shoes. And try to not wear them whenever possible. But i was hit with a few small, sharp, and HOT sparks of steel while grinding so now i wear socks and sandals. Still no shoes though.

When im not using the grinder i just use sandals without socks, I still get some metal splinters here and there though.

I was just bustin yer balls. I strip my shoes and socks off when I come home from work, too. I prefer flip-flops, but as the weather gets colder I have some sandals that go over socks. Also picked up some tabi socks and some Injinji (toe) socks a couple years ago for cold weather and flip flops.

My knife is almost done! I just have to darken the patina and clean it up.

There will be pictures soon....

Jeremy

Here are some pics of my completed WIP. I just need to clean it up a bit. Let me know what you think. There are some obvious inspirations in the design of this knife.

It is far from perfect but I had fun and I am eager to start another one. More pictures and video of the process when I have time to create them. I hope to get some pictures in the sun. it was raining when I took these pictures.
