OK OK OK OK OK, before anyone jumps me and starts making fun or talking crap, etc.. Let me just say this... I know that most people cant carry a tomahawk around or whatever and have no viable reason to do so.. I am NOT a mallninja piece of crap and i realize that this may come off as a question of something like that... However, I was wondering if anyone has ever had to grab their hawk in the instance of someone breaking in your house or if someone were attempting to attack you and you warded them off with your hawk... also i was wondering if anyone has a tomahawk for home defense... it appears to me that an american tomahawk would be perfect for home defense in the realm of blades... just thoughts.

I will be heading over to Afghanistan or Iraq here within the next year and a half, as a platoon leader, and from other 2nd Lieutenants that i know who have gone over and come back have carried tomahawks with their gear in Iraq and Afghanistan... So I am thinking about getting one to take with me overseas to the armpits of the earth; where I know only an AMERICAN TOMAHAWK can survive;) Thanks in advance guys.

For home defense I rely on my Glock 21 or Remington 870. I prefer NOT to get any closer than I have to. But thirty five odd years ago I did carry a Tomahawk, I won in a crap game from another marine how was going back to the world. they do well in close quarters but you have to keeep them sharp

First of all, Best of luck, Thank you! God bless you and your family and keep you and all our soldiers from evil effect.
It seems to me that you would be better served by spending the money and time getting really comfortable using a top quality (perhaps even tactical) folding knife to cut everyday stuff with. A good knife, well understood, will work pretty much as well as a hawk in a fight, which is really badly. If you want more, spend some time with the Everybody's Knife Bible by an ex SF guy whos name I can't remember right off but others will. Pretty amazing little book. Pistols is the lowest I go on the weapon deal, but basic empty hand training (NACFS or something else simple) is good too if you are imagining something incredibly remote like a blade fight. I would tote a tomahawk If I was interacting regularly with trees, like improvising shelter or components. Prehaps it would impress other warriors, but I doubt it would impress the real warriors that you would no doubt want to impress. Perhaps you could trade it for something cool there, but other things would be easier to tote and trade, like money. Kind of hard to justify the awkwardness and weight of packing it unless you plan on cutting wood regularly.

Actually a Tomahawk isnt made for cutting wood although it will work for that in a pinch. A VTAC is very light, very durable and quite intimidating. If I was heading out I would have a good knife and a VTAC.
Best of Luck and Thank You for Your Service...

Best kind of hawk to have in a war zone would be something with one piece construction that can be used for breaking into buildings, Prying & chopping doors, etc. A throwing/fighting hawk would likely end up as dead weight most of the time.

I would use a gun for home defense, but I would go for a Short sword before a tomahawk if for some bizarre reason I had no firearms.

I don't have time right now to go through that whole post and edit all that inappropriate language. How 'bout if you do it yourself....

allen, it is taken care of.

Rat, do you think that there is a better Tomahwak out there to consider taking to Iraq? With the patrols overy 3 days in downtown baghdad, i want to make sure I have something that is very tough and I am under the impression that these American Tomahawks are just that...

I am not completely up on what is available. I have a couple Swamp Rat crash axes on order, but the K5, Ranger, and Graham Brothers axes come to mind as well. I think the ATC hawks are sturdy too, and I think I saw a full tang model somewhere on their site.

Neat. I would like to see some of those Swamp Rat crash axes Rat... I have heard great things about Swamp Rat blades and always wanted one..... But couldnt ever find them...

Check out the Sibert Comanche if you want all metal . A real Beauty .. But more money...

This thread has some info and pics of the Crash Axe http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=426515

Preorder price was something like $180, not sure what regular price will be. they should be made available at www.ratknives.com shortly after the preorders go out.
If you are looking for Swamp Rats, you need to check the forums once in a while to be up on what is happening, Eric will post anouncements when things are coming up.
If you are deploying with the military, they will probably be able to help you out/set you up, shoot Eric an email if you have any questions.

i got a warning or restriction notice from cougar man for "saying bad words." even after i editted it... oh well. sorry to those who were deeply offended and hurt by my bad language.

I carried a crash axe (read that as spike hawk), a number of years while CO'ing a security detail at an explosives production plant, where firearms were restricted for EVERYBODY, LEO's included. Lesson's learned; 1). a hawk is one of the most intimidating but PC edged weapons you can field (swords are kind'a frowned upon in these environments. :D 2). Breaching ability outweighs fighting ability for overall utility. 3). All metal hawks rule. FWIT that's why I'm a K5 Tactical fan for the $$$.

Although I am a fan of all mentioned designs and makers of hawks, the ATC VTAC cannot be beat for the money. It is near indestructable and in entry, if handle is bent, it bends back, if broken, it can be replaced. The shock from the VTACs handle is less painful than from a full tang design as well. I think that there are better and much more aesthetically pleasing designs, but, as I said, for the money, it's the best. Invest what you save monetarily into a GOOD 6"+ blade, you will not regret it.
