Has anyone used the ATAX? I was surfing thru Hoods Woods and saw it there. I would like to know how it performs as a real survival tool. I have the Tops TRACKER and a Busse STEELHEART and a Chris Reeves hollow handle. But im looking for somthing easy to carry and wont scare other hikers to death when we meet on the trail. The ATAX dosent look like a normal knife so people might not think im a physco killer. I would hate to be reported to homeland defense for hiking with a big knife. "Parinoid" Who said that? Anyway does the ATAX work? Like to hear from actual folks that use and abuse there knives for what they are intended for. Thanks.

I have carried the ATAX on my Daypack hip-belt in plain view in several National Parks without any questions. A friend of mine was ask to leave his CS SRK in the car by a Ranger in both Teton NP and Yellowstone NP. I was with him on a remote trail in the Tetons when it happened and the others in our group looked at my ATAX, but nothing was said. Maybe the Ranger didn't think it looked too intimidating?
As for use, like any multi-use tool, there are some limits to what it can do well. You give up some control and chopping power for its compact size. Some of this can be made up for by adding a handle in the field etc, but once again you have to learn how to use it and be willing to work within its limitations. I like mine for limited chopping and scraping and it makes me "feel safer", but I use my SAK or Rinaldi Enigma for most fine cutting and fish cleaning chores in the field.

Thanks for the info I kinda figured with everything that is going on a guy packing around a big knife might draw alot of attention. Like you I use my sak for about everything But do like the idea of something else for a little more security and chopping. Didnt know if the ATAX was anything more than a novelty though.

I must admit that I had never heard of the ATAX before this thread. I wondered over to their web site(www.survival.com) to look at it. I think it's pretty cool! If you took the time to learn to use it, it would probably do everthing they say. I would have probably got one on an "impulse purchase" but they seem to be out of them at the moment. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Now I have to add it to my list of stuff to get.  :D :D
