TSC sells what they call "weldable steel," and "material steel."

The store has no further specs on the round and flat stock of all different shapes and sizes.

Does anyone know where I can find the specs on this steel?

Thanks.

I use that "hardware store" steel to practice grinding and file work. Could be alright for guards and fittings though

In a Tractor Supply Company catalog a few years ago, they had some plow points that were described as "1080 tool steel" and some allen wrenches described as "6150 spring steel." I can't find either of those on their website, but all of the bush hog blades and some of the finish mower blades in their on-line catalog are described as "5160 spring steel." If you forge, these might interest you, but you can certainly get good steel cheaper in other places. Brand new simple steels are much cheaper, delivered to your door.

Thanks for everyone's reply. I was thinking of this steel simply b/c I am always driving by a TSC so there is no shipping.

I may get some in the future for knockaround stuff. :)

You can melt it in a side blast charcoal forge to make high carbon steel, but other than that its not too useful for knife blades.
