they have a variety of sizes. very tempting. No labels, so steel unknown. Considering the price and local supply, I'm gonn'a try it, but has anyone else? Do any of you guys know if worthwhile, or what type of steel they carry?

Thx,

Dave

Yup, I bet you a bar of new O1 it's just mild steel. Makes a strong guard. If it was cutlery steel it would surely be labeled.

Thought so, guys. Might give it a shot, you know how tempting a piece of brand new steel (even unknown) can be. Will lett'ya know.

I guarantee you it's A36 structural steel. It's recycled junk re-melted into a general-use steel that's pretty unpredictable with the notable exception that it's NEVER good for a knife....

Go bug a local machine shop for drops...you'll be better off ;)

Same exact stuff from Home Depot and Lowes. Good for a welding project, not knives.

Sorry I meant to add my.02 and forgot. You can get tool steel
W-1, or O-1 at Fastenal stores. There is a store in Manassas if that is close.
They have a store locator on their web-site

At our local tractor supply thel carry 1018 cold-rolled flat bar stock and some round. I'm sure it's the same stuff there.

TSC does sell spring harrows that are made of 1080. Not much good for stock removal, though.
