Traditional German Folders?

I'm relatively new to the knife collecting world. I have my French knives and my English knives but are there any traditional German folder knives out there took into? Do they have their own styles? I know of brands such as puma but a lot of their folders seem to be based off other designs.

Thanks

It strikes me that cutlery is still pretty strong in Germany, particularly Solingen. Brands and makers like Boker, Schlieper (Olbertz?), Klaas, Hartkopf, Hubertus….

In terms of particularly German folder patterns, aren’t the Scout/Camper patterns from the likes of Boker and Hartkopf originally of German origin? The stag handled patterns from Hubertus with saws and gutting blades?

Another traditional German pattern, and a very good one, is the copperhead. Comfortable in the hand or the pocket, and at 3.75" closed is just about right for any cutting chore.

Case copied the name, using it on different patterns, but I believe only Queen ever made any in this country.

The Mercator Cat knife has been around since the late c19th, I feel it may have influenced the Douk-Douk.

Check in this interesting thread too

G'day Jack
Lots of good info here. I like the older pumas & boker is good. There are heaps of good makers in Europe. Careful the more you look the more you like😱😀
As you like French knives, heaps of regional patterns in this thread.
Cheers

Thanks mate,

I ordered a donjon from art et couteaux maybe a week ago but haven't heard anything. Hopefully just closed for the holiday break.

I would love to try a full sized German sodbuster one day...a hippenkneip I think? With carbon steel and wooden handles.

And boker has some beautiful examples even if they are not all German patterns

Otter Messer makes some nice knives for a pretty reasonable price.

Those Three Rivet knives are very attractive especially the white handled ones, been thinking about getting one, look like they open out nice & straight. How is the rest of the F&F?

Thanks, Will

My example was finished quite well, especially for the price. I liked the strong spring, but I found it a little larger than my preference for pocket carry. Otter makes similar knives that are a little smaller, but not as easy to find in the US.

Rachet knives are also mentioned as being traditionally German, like the original Okapi knife.
I am a big fan of Okapis, and F Herder still makes a ratchet knife in Germany, but I think the design may possibly have originated in France, or at least was very popular there in the early 1900s. Here is one example:

You can Google “couteau à palme” or “couteau cracra” for more examples.
