I did a search and found all manner of threads on foods, rations, snacks, etc. But I didn't see a thread solely devoted to trail mix. If you make your own, what do you put in it? Just today, I bought the really tasty mix below. I think I'm going to recreate some versions of it and carry it afield this winter.

  • dried raspberries (cranberries would work well too)
  • raisins
  • white chocolate chips
  • pecans
  • cashews
  • almonds

Guyon that sounds delicious. I would take out the pecans and cashews and add peanuts...I think I will make some tomorrow to take to work.

Trail mix is often the only food I take with me for short trips. I usually make big batches and store it in bags or nalgene bottles. I just run through the grocery store and grab what I find, but I have a similar mix to yours:

Dried Rasins
Dried Cranberries
Dried Cherries
M&M's, almond
peanuts
cashews
pecans

If I don't want it as sweet as above, I use cranberries, freeze dried peas, 'corn nuts', and nuts.

The key for me is lots of nuts for fats and proteins. Anything else is gravy...so to speak.

Lets see. My personal "mix" tends to vary a bit from time to time, but currently it contains:

  • Black Rasins
  • Dried Banana Chips
  • M&Ms
  • Peanuts
  • Pecans
  • Cashews

I made some like this to take hunting with me.

mixed nuts
M&Ms
chocholate or yogurt covered raisins

I always make:

- Dried Cherries
- Dried Blueberries
- Pistachios (sp?)
- Cashews
- Dark chocolate M&Ms

B

I also have a couple recipes for "energy bars" that you can wrap in saran wrap and stick in your pack that are awesome! Didn't want to side track the thread, but let me know.

I start with a bag of trail mix from Costco and add to it... pumpkin seeds, sunflower, extra M&Ms or choc chips, raw almonds... whatever I am interested in at the time.

i always make my own trail mix because i can control the quality of the ingredients...this mix looks good because it has no raisins...i don't like raisins but i wish i did like them; wouldn't kill me to eat them...i use to pick them out of raisin bran as a kid...

i like grapes, i drink wine but i don't like raisins...that's messed up...

Back when I was just out of high school I was working in a truckstop pumping diesel. I would buy
Raisins
sunflower seeds (Shelled)
sixlets (generic m&m's)
corn nuts
all single serving size
dump in a brown paper bag
Shake
munch on during shift
We were in a price war with several local truckstops
and pumping 7k-11k gallons of diesel an 8 hour shift was common. I pump over 17000 gallon on a double shift one time. I lived off the stuff that summer

i always make my own trail mix because i can control the quality of the ingredients...

That is why I like to make mine as well. Many of the commerically made up ones are heavy on the peanuts, raisins and such. I don't have a problem with any of that, I just don't think it is as yummy as cashews, pistachio's, cherries and blueberries :D

B

Peanuts
Brazil Nuts
Cashews

All non-salted

Dried Papaya
Dried Pineapple
Dried Apple
Dried BU-NAN-NUH :D

All of the above sound good. Has anyone made pemmican? I would like to try with my deer jerky.

I don't have any set recipe. It will usually contain M&Ms, peanuts, raisins and whichever dried fruits strike my fancy at the time. I really like dried apricots and banana chips so those are usually included.

i like grapes, i drink wine but i don't like raisins...that's messed up...

I'm exactly the same. I've grown out of picking them out so will eat them begrudgingly but I don't like them yet eat grapes and drink wine.

As for my trailmix it varies, usually to what ever I have on hand or think of at the time but basically the same as most: M&Ms, cashews (honey roasted often), almonds (prefer smoked), rice chips, dried fruit (strawberries, bananna, apricot etc).

I like the idea of the white choc chips Guyon, never occured to me before and would be nice with the rasberries. I'll ahve to try that.

The Dollar Tree is your friend! I picked up a bunch of stuff to make up a nice sized bowl of mix tonight. Let's see...

2 bags of salted cashews
1 jar of peanuts
1 bag of banana chips
1 bag of sunflower seeds
1 bag of yogurt covered raisins
1 bag of Tropical trail mix (with pineapple, raisins, dates, bananas, papaya, coconut)

At the grocery store, I snagged...

Ocean Spray dried cranberries, both regular and cherry flavored. $2.50 a pack.
Sliced almonds @ $1.80 for a pack
White chocolate chips @ $2.50 for a bag

I added a few more raisins from home and voilà... a tasty mix if I do say so myself.
Came in under $18 with tax and made up enough mix to fill a gallon-sized Ziploc.

Bushman5's Anti-Vegan Trailmix:

- 1 lb diced beef jerky
- 1 lb dice dried hot pepperoni
- 1 lb diced hard cheese (like romano or slightly dried aged cheddar)
- 1 lb diced dried Lanyager (spelling?) sausage
- 1 lb diced dates
- 1 lb currants
- 1 lb dried cranberries

mix everything into a bucket, portion into heavy freezer bags or containers and enjoy on the trail. Its meaty, tasty, and excellent long term energy.
