does any one know of any good knife fighting/stick dvd's ? for the basic stuff.
thanks

Oh boy, there is actually so many that it is hard to point one or two out. Nonetheless, I suggest starting with Mike Janich's "Fightng Folders", and then you can continue with his other DVDs from there on, namely, "Advanced Fighting Folders" and "Mastering Fighting Folders". That is really good material with a nice progression. Also, you cannot go wrong with James Keating or Kelly Worden.
When it comes to stick, maybe you should check out the late Terry Gibson's videos, but than once again, there are so many out there that it is just the matter of preference...

My fave is Shivworks Reverse Edge Methods, I & II. Whether or not you go reverse edge, they are a treasure trove for reality-based knifework

For stick:
Check out the Sayoc Stick Grappling DVD. It covers some close quarter submission stick instruction that's rarely seen on dvds.

The Sama Sama 2006 DVD comes out next week (contains 2 hours of instruction covering stick and knife).

Guro Dan Inosanto's 6 or 7 dvd set "Filipino Martial Arts" from the 80's is very good and can be bought for $100-150. I got it on i&i sports but many places carry it. He covers a range of topics including single and double sticks, knives, history, drills, striking angles, disarms, etc.

You know, once again I'm wondering if maybe we should actually point out the DVDs/videos to avoid, i.e. crappy ones, since fortunately those are more rare than good ones, or at least to my impression.

I liked the late Edgar Sulite's "Single Stick Skills" from Unique Publications covers some really good basic stuff with applications.

It all depends on which style you want to get into. Buy the book Filipino Martial Culture for a full spectrum of Kali styles you can study in the US.
If you don't care and want something extremely basic buy Ron Balicki's DVD's on Kali. All 3 are very basic and well organized.
My reccomendation is if this is something you want to try forget about a DVD. Pick a style, find a school, and give it a shot.

Guro Rick Tucci's Kali Series is pretty much the most exhaustive and complete series on the Lacoste-Inosanto method (It's more up-to date than the 80's series from Inosanto).

What is everyone's experience with the Dogbrothers videos? I like what I've seen in preview form, but the previews are understandibly short on instructional content.

Dog Brothers 1st group of videos (made in the early 90's) were made primarily for full contact stickfighting useage.
After that all their instructional tapes are great. As for length some tapes run 2-3 videos long in content.
Although most of their available tapes relate primarily for full contact stickfighting some of their other video topics are excellent as well. Such as Kali Tudo (for Kali in the MMA ring), Interface of knife and gun (practical knife defense), Grandfthers Speak (Documentary on some of Kali's U.S. founding fathers).

To this day, I have yet to see such a detailed presentation of fighting-oriented stick work. Burt Richardson did a good job with his SBG produced videos, but Dog Brothers are awsome. However, ig you are looking for a style-specific, tradition-oriented, or maybe blade-oriented stuff, you might want to look elsewhere...

Yes, I've seen the previews and will eventually own this series, once I can save up the money. If money wasn't a concern I would probably get these rather than the 80's Inosanto series. There is also the new, expanded 9 dvd set "The Definitive Inosanto Collection" ($400) which looks like it has a lot of good material.

All these videos that people have recommended have great information but i think most of these recommendations are way past the introductory level the author was looking for.
Guro Dan, Rick Tucci, the Sayoc group, and Edgar Sulite have great material but at most times is a bit too advanced for the Kali beginner. Guro Dan's first video series jumps around and is so fast paced you'd burn out the rewind button the first time you watched it. And the Sayoc's are the best for kali knife, but I don't think 3 of 9 template is a technique a beginner can just pick up by watching a DVD.

Guro Tucci's tapes are meant to be practiced in the order they are numbered. Essentially it is suggested that you are familiar with the basics presented in volume 1 first.

It's extremely good stuff, and I would truly recommend at least picking up volume 1 and seeing how you like it.

i know just a little about knife fighting. i just want to know a little more about some of the baics. i don't need to become a pro. but enought to defend my self. thanks

Oh, you want to know about knife videos?
In that case you should get your hands on Kelly Worden's "Practical Knife Figting for Personal Protection", published by Paladin Press. He does beautiful job as the means of introduction, but the one that will actually get you rather far along the way, should you chosoe to pursue it.

Master Jimmy Tacosa has just finished volume one and two on Serrada Eskrima Basic Concepts. A very good set of DVDs with a vast array of techniques that under personal instruction would mostly complete the basic training in Serrada. He is selling them as a set only (volume 1 and volume 2) and the price for both is $100. You can email me at tsefreeflow@yahoo.com with questions or interest.

Can see some old clips of Master Tacosa with GM Angel Cabales here:

If you're looking for basic knife skills videos, I recommend the following:

"Surviving a Street Knife Fight" and "Winning a Street Knife Fight", both by
Marc "Animal" MacYoung. Both are excellent. They came out around 10 or
so years ago, maybe a little more, but they are very good.
They can be obtained from Paladin Press on VHS @ 19.95 each. or you can
get them from MacYoung on DVD, both on one DVD for $25. Here:

James Keating's Drawpoint 1, as recommended by ThrustMagazine, is a great
choice as well. It can be obtained from Paladin Press under the name
"Reverse Grip Knife Fighting" for $29.95. (VHS)

Another excellent basic tape is "Comtech/Natural Spririt Intensive Knife",
a tag team job from Keating & Kelly Worden. $19.95 from Paladin Press.
I highly recommend it, and I have this one.

As for basic stick, Kelly Worden has "Solo Baston" & "Solo Baston-Sumbrado"
both are $19.95 each on DVD. I haven't seen these particular videos, but I
have seen other single stick material by Mr. Worden, and it is excellent.

Another Stick video is Worden's "Double Baston". I have this one and it's
excellent. Also $19.95 on DVD from Kelly Worden.
