I'm looking for a good Tritium watch for field use. I like some features. I have a Citizen Eco-Drive Titanium with a chrono and alarm, but lousy luminous hands. So I'm looking for something like that but not really fancey but more than a analog watch with date window. Also, I'd like links to sites.

Tritium hands, metal band and water resistant to 30M+

Riley,
Can I assume that you're referring to an illumination system featuring encapsulated tritium vials (as in the Luminox watches)? If so, then I think our choices are narrowed substantially from the very beginning. In fact, I'm only aware of three companies that currently offer watches fitting this description.

-Luminox (Traser/Microtec); many styles
-Hesco/Meprolight; Israeli Military Watch
-Stocker&Yale (mainly for military contracts, I believe; Marathon may also make similar military watches)

Recent threads in this forum have discussed the first two somewhat thoroughly, and as I say, I'm unsure of the availability of the third in the civilian market. Does anyone else know of some other watch manufacturers currently using Tritium vials?

Bronco,
You are right. Vials, as I've heard that paint doesn't glow as britely. It may be bright enough though. Any web links?

Riley,

I too also had a Citizen Eco Drive titanium, the world timer to be exact, but gave it up for the Luminox because of the weak luminosity of the citizen. I emailed citizen and suggested that they implement tritium vials on the hands of their watches. So far, no response.

I really used to be concerned about the Navy Seals printing on the face of the Luminox watch. Now, it doesn't really matter. I know a Navy Seal and he thinks its cool but has never seen any of his fellow seals wear one. In fact, he said it was too expensive and heavy compared to what he uses, a Casio.

Information provided by the website called the Military Watch Resource once suggested that the Luminox watches had inferior mechanical movements compared to the military issue watchs by Stocker and Yale and Marathon but some generous, brave and curious soul opened up both watches and found that both military issue and the commercial version had the same Swiss Rondo seven jewel movement. I think the conclusion was that the military watch is still more coveted but FAR, FAR rarer and also A LOT more expensive.

BTW, I bought my luminox with stainless steel band from Botach for $159. If you wait you are likely to get that price again but be aware that the availability may vary. Also when I called botach to confirm my order, they were somewhat incompetent. I did get my watch though.

Luminox is the way to go if you want brightness but if you don't like their style I might suggest Chase-Durer. They have heavily tritium painted hands and are very, very bright also. http://www.chase-durer.com

But...whatever you do....don't do business with Botach tactical!!!!!!!!!! I ordered trijicon site from them once and they say on my order for 3 months and then took 1 more month to refund. If they dont have an item in stock they will go ahead and charge your card anyway and sit on it (collecting interest from your money) until they have enough orders of the same item to discount themselves.

They did this to me....stating that they were backordered from the Trijicon factory. A call to Trijicon confirmed that they were full of BS!!!!

Ashford has pretty pictures of the watches, but if you find one you like, I wouldn't recommend buying it until you've given Patrick Ma a call.

In the new Sharper Image catalog, there's two new Luminox models, and both of them don't have NAVY SEAL written all over the dial!! There's an all black model based on the Air Force Stealth, and an all titanium model. Same tritium, and same dial style, basically. Now here's the catch...

$399 for the Stealth model.
$499 for the titanium model.

Yikes. But, hey, if ya need 'em, ya need 'em. Good luck.

If you want a traser(tritium vial) watch but don't want the Luminox Navy Seal imprint, one place to look is to check out ebay for Marathon Navigators.

They are very similar in look and size, but without the pesky logo, offer a tad more cachet(actual military issue!) and can often be found for approx $130.

here's an example: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=501369431

The Israeli Military watch is also a trser style, for $199.95 at www.Uscav.com. They also offer a Cammenga Quartermaster watch for $99.95 which appears to use trasers/tritium vials also.

Para mentioned it, Military Watch Resource, at www.broadarrow.net, is a great resource!
