Tru-Bal Bowie Axe

I picked this up yesterday. It is supposed to be some kind of throwing/outdoor utility knife.....I understand it was a PX item during the Vietnam war.

I could see it being useful.

According to the Tru-Balance website the Model #2 "Bowie Axe" has been made from the 1950's to the present day.

Randall sold them for a longtime. At one time he tried to get NASA interested in them (and a larger size) as a bolo knife for survival packs, but nothing came of it, and NASA went with the Case Apollo survival machete.

They were also popular with the few that hunt with thrown knife.

I would have liked to have had one as a teen bowfishng on the river....It would have made for a great carp "head-knocker".

Blah, I would have likely lost it doing something stupid like throwing it at a carp and had to watch as it swam away.

DocJD you’ll need to handle one to understand how it can work. Tru Bal used to offer custom grinds for folks wanting some actual knife use with their throwers. Surely it’s not optimal but they absolutely can and do serve well

Gil Hibben's are pretty good for cooking, if you're, say, a cook. On a battleship. That gets sieged.
