I have this ax that was my Grandfathers. It has been in the shop for a few years and I use to split kindling for the wood burner. I was looking at it because the handle is loose and saw "True temper tommy axe " stamped on the head with "No. taf" stamped on the other side. After googling it I saw it might be worth something and maybe should be hanging on the wall instead of using it. My question is the handle. It says " 28" Boys S.B. Axe" It also says something underneath that but is worn off. It is 28" long and was wondering if this might be the original handle? I don't know if I should try to fix it, or just hang it on the wall?
Thanks for any help.

The true temper tommy axes and tomahawks are pretty neat in my book, I think they usually came on a hatchet handle or straight hammer style handle in the 14"-18" range. Over on Flea-bay they go for anything between $20-$75 or so depending on condition. I wound guess that the 28" haft was added after the factory, although I've always wanted to do the same to one… they're kinda heavy for a hatchet head and probably work out real well on a boys axe haft. One of the members here on the forum put one one a 24" haft if I'm not mistaken, there is pictures, I forget which one of the guys it was though.

They are heavy and would do well on a longer haft.

Original handles were 14" and most were semi-octagonalized.
