Does anybody have any suggestions on a good EDC knife for travel. I've always packed a blade or three in my checked luggage and know that TSA has lifted the Ban but the restrictions are pretty limiting to anything other than Swiss army or gentlemen's knife. I just got a Spyderco Chicago a couple weeks ago but from what I understand its too thick. I was thinking maybe the Chive but I want something a little different. I already have SOG Micron on keys and a swisscard in my wallet. But I want more.... Help?

2.36 blade length
Less than .5 width
no molded handles(?)
And non locking only.

Traditionals would probably be the best way to go. I do know Ernie Emerson is working on a knife that has all of these.

Opinel #6 non-locking?
Fallkniven U1
CRKT pocket classic whittler

I would want a 95mm higonokami with the blade cut down to 2.3 inches, that would be pretty cool.

Emerson stated they will be producing a travel knife that meets the TSA specs. Should be interesting to see what they come up with. That's what I'm personally going to wait for.

I wouldn't jump into buying airplane knives just yet. Especially if you intend to actually carry them onto an airplane. It still may cause a hassle getting onto the plane, legal or not. A Swiss Army Knife should be fine beyond that, I wouldn't risk it. In all honesty, I wouldn't even risk that, at least not for a few months until the new rule is established. The TSA agents don't know what they're doing, period. Even with the new rule you're still likely to get hassled over a drawing of a knife. If your time is worthless to you, by all means, go for it. Otherwise, wait a bit for the TSA igits to get used to the idea.

I have a sweet design all penned out and a cardboard model that works in principle. It's a different take on a friction folder, I just don't have the expertise to pull it off... Already have a name down- the TSAR, as in "TSA R"eady... Just need someone with the expertise to fabricate it for me.

I've considered making one, but I'm not sure what "molded handles" mean.

Is G10 considered a "molded handle"? Who knows?

"Molded grip" seems to be anything that's contoured to fit the hand or fingers. See page 5 of the TSA prohibited items list. So the Spyderco Slipits are out.

It also seems to exclude 91mm SAKs (the most common sized one), which seems to be one of the main examples of an "allowed" knife. They picture what looks like a Vic Tinker for the sample "good" knife. The cutting edge comes in at about 2.35", but the full blade is closer to 2.75".

Someone needs to mod a Chive or Scallion to fit the blade restrictions, remove the lockbar and assist, then just tighten up the pivot real good :p
